October Afternoon, Paperie, Studio Calico

… a little bit dumb. So, last night I went to buy a secondhand hardcover book for the Studio Calico Happy Little Moments class (it’s awesome so far!) and as I was leaving the store, I stopped at the doors, waiting….waiting….waiting…. Why aren’t they opening? Ummmm, they’re manual, you have to push them open yourself! Yeah, not my brightest moment. Hope you all have a good chuckle over that this morning!

…. eager to get started on said class. I have all the pages cut out of my book (it’s ok book lovers, deep breath!) and now I just need to pull together a kit. I’m pretty sure it will have lots of October Afternoon paper, labels, and journal cards, plus some random other bits thrown in for good measure – like Elle’s Studio tags.

… happy that I’m in this class with a couple of friends. As Krista said wrote, “Doesn’t hurt that I’m doing it with a friend and that’s awesome!” I totally agree!

… excited. Got a tweet from Studio Calico last night saying I had won the Story Hour kit! I tweeted my favourite LO from the design team gallery and was the random winner – yay! And that kit has the exclusive American Crafts roller date stamp which rocks!

… anxious for the weekend to start. I have an all day crop at The Paperie tomorrow and I’m planning to do only things for me – no class prep allowed! And then D and I have a night alone – no kiddies! We were given a night at a hotel for Christmas and we have movie coupons so it will be a fabulous, but free, night out!

Hope you are all feeling good today too! Have a great weekend!

1. Signed up at the last minute yesterday for this – after my enabler partner-in-crime agreed to do it with me. We’re having “dates” to keep us on the ball! It looks amazing so far – enough that I want to dig out my very dusty sewing machine! And I saw on Twitter that another friend is playing along too – our 3 styles are so different it will be fun to see the finished products.

2. G is “super wicked” today. And to make it worse, he’s giving me those “I know I’m being bad and I don’t care” smiles. Anyone want a 2 year old?

3. Played with my Studio Calico Country Fair kit last night – the pics are from a time before G turned “super wicked” and was still just cute…

Swing

Told you I’d be making more of those stitched tags!

4. I’ve been off a day all week so I think today is Friday. And that kind of sucks. Especially since I have high hopes for a great weekend!

5. Going on a shopping trip this evening – a second hand store for a cheap hardcover book. Wish me luck!

Have a good Thursday, hopefully it’s less “wicked” than mine!

Moxie Fab World: Home Sweet Home

I was going to post about the first 2012 Yearlong Class we had yesterday (complete with two birthday cakes for me!), but when I saw the Tuesday Trigger at Moxie Fab World last night, I had to play along!

We’ll talk about the class on Wednesday.

I loved the red and blue polka dots, the little bird and the woodgrain door. This is what I came up with, while managing to keep all those elements.

Tuesday Trigger: Home Sweet Home card

The door opens…

… so you can see the sweet little bird inside!

I used an old Hero Arts stamp set (I cut the crown off the bird – yes, I cut up my stamps!), and a Papertrey Ink sentiment. Bazzill and Stampin’ Up! cardstock, with October Afternoon SprINKlers, Cavallini paper tape, Ranger Distress Inks, EK Success circle punch, Studio Calico/Hero Arts stamp set, and a large Fiskars cloud punch to finish it off.

Hope you enjoy it, head on over to Moxie Fab World and play along yourself!

Tuesday Techniques – Faux Metal

Authentique, Distress Stain, Embossing Powder, heat embossing, Perfect Pearls, Ranger, Scrap Space, Stampin' Up, Stamps, Studio Calico, techniques, VersaMark

Super fun technique today – faux metal! All you need is silver (or gold) embossing powder, VersaMark, and a heat gun! It doesn’t get easier than this, people, and it’s cool – bonus! And I apologize for the pictures – I did this in the night time and the lighting in my kitchen is terrible for pictures!

The Supplies

Pretty simple – you need VersaMark (or some other sticky embossing ink), a Heat Tool, silver embossing powder, and stamps.

First, press VersaMark onto some cardstock, then cover with silver embossing powder.

Silver Embossing Powder

Next, heat it up! There are a couple of ways to do the next few steps, but this is my way. After the first layer, let the powder cool for a moment, ink the embossed surface with VersaMark again, add more powder, and heat. For the next layer, as soon as the powder melts and the surface is still hot, pour embossing powder over it and heat again. Follow this melt, sprinkle, emboss series until you have 4-5 layers of embossing powder. You will notice that the more layers you add, the faster it melts, and the smoother the surface becomes.

4 layers of embossing powder

For the final step, take a stamp and ink it up with VersaMark, then set it aside. Melt the final layer of powder and the immediately lay the stamp in the pool of silver. Let it sit for a moment until the powder cools, then lift it off. The VersaMark should allow it to release very easily.

If your image doesn’t stamp correctly, no worries! That’s why this is the easiest, most fool proof technique out there – simply reheat the powder, let it melt again, and re stamp. You can do that over and over and over and… You get the drift!

Heart Trio

Heart

Another thing you can do is to apply these same steps to heat embossing a chipboard letter. The difference is at the very end. After stamping a pattern on the letter, heat the powder again. The stamp design will disappear, but will leave behind a streaky, almost black residue. This will add to the faux metal look, especially on a letter or small, solid embellishment.

I punched and cut my shapes out, so you still get the pattern, but not the debossed look. If you cut out a square, or cut the shapes outside the stamp line, you’ll get more of a stamped metal look. That heart trio would look awesome cut into a rectangle and left as a simple embellishment on a card front!

Heart Trio Embellishment

See the flecks of black, how it looks like a more aged metal? That’s what you get when you re heat!

You do want to be careful when cutting as, once cooled, the layers of powder can be brittle, especially if you have lots of layers, and they can crack easily. This is a cool look, if that’s what you’re going for (maybe we’ll do that next week!), but if you want a smooth surface, take your time.

Once you’re happy, make your project!

Completed Tag with Faux Metals Embellishments

Closeup

Look at the texture! And a stamp did that! That’s what I call super cool!

Now, you know you’re just itching to try this out for yourself so go do it! What are you waiting for?

Oh, you’re waiting for this…

Scrap Space - during

OK, so maybe you don’t see a big change but let me tell you, since Friday, a lot (a *lot*) of work has been done in this space – you can actually see the floor now! Wish me luck on the rest of it!

And, as always, when you try this technique I’d love to see your results, so post a pic somewhere and leave a link in the comments!

Things on Thursday – CHA Edition!

Basically Bare, BoBunny, Distress Ink, Distress Markers, Heidi Swapp, October Afternoon, Ranger, ScrapBook, Simple Stories, Stampin' Up, Studio Calico, Tim Holtz, Unity Stamp Co., Washi Tape, Year Long Album

The Craft and Hobby Association (CHA) just finished up their big show in Florida where manufacturers released their new product for the year. I thought I would give you a run down of my needs!

As an aside, I had an entertaining email chat with a friend (Hi Cathie!) about the difference between wants and needs and she agrees with my reasonings for the needs list. Now I’m fully justified in buying!

1. Distress Markers. Yes, I own a zillion Stampin’ Up markers, but these are different, really and truly. They match all my Distress Ink pads! And there’s a white one too!

2. Studio Calico wood veneer shapes. I love these, they take mist and ink beautifully and look great just left plain. They’re the perfect embellishment. And they’re releasing people and cameras – perfect for my Yearlong Album!

3. October Afternoon SprINKlers. I admit to a slight problem – when I love something, I must have it in every colour (case in point, Distress Ink). And I really love the chalk finish and quick drying time of SprINKlers. Plus the new colours are amazing!

4. Heidi Swapp Memory File. I was shocked by this one, shocked. Love the system and think it’s brilliant, though I know I’ll never do it (but it really is genius). What I really want are the FotoStacks – again, perfect for the Yearlong Album.

5. Simple Stories/Unity Stamp Company. I love Simple Stories – we’re using the Year.o.graphy line for the 2012 Yearlong album – and Unity makes really great rubber stamps, so to get both in one product? Awesome! Especially when they make these, maybe my favourite release of CHA.

6. BoBunny Vintage Double Dot Cardstock. The DoubleDot has been my favourite go to cardstock – great weight, great colours, great tone on tone patterns. And now, just when I thought it couldn’t get better, it’s vintage!

7. Now, that’s not my full list, there’s still Tim Holtz/Idea-ology Chitchat Word Stickers, and washi tape galore, Basically Bare albums, Simple Stories everything (especially the pockets), stamps….. it’s all bad people, it’s all bad!

Let me know what’s on your want/need list, I may have to add it to my own! 🙂

…I am cold. We all bundled up and went out to slide and play in the snow that was dropped on us yesterday. Unfortunately, the wind is bitter cold and now I can’t warm up again. Brrrrrr.

…I can’t type very well and am making lots of spelling errors. That just may have something to do with the two-year-old who is determined to sit on my lap today.

G & Mama

Don’t you just love his new “smile for the camera” face? Cracks me up every time! Does not amuse his photographer father as much, especially since I think it’s so funny that I keep asking for it! Ha! 🙂

…we’re having mac & cheese for lunch, with peanut butter and chocolate chip cookies for dessert. Comfort food for a cold day and something that is always devoured by the kiddies. That being said, they do just as well with broccoli and spinach too. But I digress…

…M is having a bad day. Enough said. Sigh.

…it’s very loud. Well, that’s par for the course so I don’t know why I’m even mentioning it. Moving along….

…I started this class. It’s good so far and I’m looking forward to more inspiration!

…I’m plugging away at the 2012 Album and getting frustrated. Luckily, I can turn to my graphic designer husband to do cover pages for me!

Cover Page Sneak Peek

…the playroom has had cow and dog races (the cow always wins and apologizes to the dog), monsters eating trophies, storms destroying the train tracks (“Really, Mama, it wasn’t me, it was the storm!), and pirates making little boys walk the plank. Never a dull moment.

Wishing you all a day that is warmer but just as entertaining as mine!

It’s been a big week around here:

1. I started this blog! (Big cheers! Confetti! Yay!)

2. The cookies we made yesterday were yummy, yummy, yummy – even gluten free!

3. I got fun eye candy mail, 3 magazines from Northridge Publishing – Create, Simply Handmade, and Cards. Love how beautiful these books are.

4. I’ve been creating! I was in a rut for, oh, a million years or so it seems, so it feels really great to be doing stuff just for me again.

5. I finished the Year Long Album 2011, typed up all the instructions, and have almost finished getting all the pictures in there. Nice to have this one clued up, since the 2012 class is just around the corner!

6. I finished the Kraft Glassine Album for the class I’m teaching in February. Once again, instructions are typed up and I have all the pics in. Nice to be ahead of the game for once!

7. I signed up for this online class and am pumped to start! I love Amy Tan’s style and the list of special guests is awesome too. Also, I have three Paperie kits and one Studio Calico kit mostly unused and waiting to be played with – I need the push!

8. The big one this week is especially big for M. She had her follow-up appointment with the optometrist and the news was not what we were hoping for. As a result, we’ve started patching her right eye to get her left eye working better. Sigh. Tell me if any four-year-old would make this easy, because my daughter is not! She loves pirates though, so we’re really pushing that angle (please forgive the bad pic – I think it was taken on D’s cell phone!).

M, acting the pirate and not wanting a picture taken!

And that’s my week so far, lots of fun and not so fun things happening. To let you go on a good note, here’s a LO I did using a little of the November Paperie kit – lots of Amy Tangerine (can you tell I love that Amy Tangerine stamp?), some October Afternoon, a bit of  K&Co. Smash, and a touch of Studio Calico! As always, click on the image to see a larger size.

All You Need is Love & Dirt

Here’s hoping your week is already, or is becoming, just as interesting as mine!
