First off, this is for all of you:

thanks!

Thanks so much for the wonderful birthday greetings and love for the stitched tag tutorial – it’s ones of my faves now and I know I’ll be using that technique a lot. And it was so nice to get happy messages in my comments all day! Also, Lawn Fawn stamps and Sakura pens? Perfect pairing!

Second, let’s talk about Sunday and the first 2012 Yearlong Album Class at The Paperie!

(As an aside, I believe – but I could be wrong – there are a few slightly modified Yearlong Album kits if you want to join in but can’t make the time commitment or live too far away or just want the paper and album to play with! Just contact Meghan at The Paperie if you’re interested and we’ll see what we can do.)

We were an almost full house – 20 people are registered for the 11 classes and 18 were able to make it on Sunday. It was a tight fit but we all got cozy with each other – I know some new friends were made pretty quickly in those close quarters!

Close Quarters!

We got a lot done – the cover page,

Cover Page

the January spread,

January

and the February spread.

February

It was fun and productive though I’m sure for a couple of the newbies it was a bit overwhelming – these classes can get loud and they’re pretty fast paced! Everyone got through it though, and we got a start on all of the calendar pages too – I call that a successful class!

Working away...

Finally, I got a couple of surprise birthday cakes near the end – my friend Lori and my mom both had the same idea and brought in the chocolate, which was definitely well received by all!

Chocolate Cake!

I hope you all have a wonderful Leap Day!

Tuesday Techniques – Stitched Tags aka Great Minds Think Alike

Amy Tan, Backstitch, Lawn Fawn, October Afternoon, Satin stitch

So…funny story.

I had this week’s technique done  and photographed and ready to blog when I happened to read Krista’s blog on Saturday. In it she promised a little tutorial on how to make a stitched “love” tag.

What?!?!? That’s what I already had done!

So I told her we needed to communicate more. And we laughed about it. And we (with Meghan’s help) came up with an awesome plan.

We decided to do our posts on the same day and link up to each other! That’s right, two for one, my friends – a “Love” tag and a “Laugh” tag! You are all so lucky today you should go buy lottery tickets or something!

Oh, and give a me share when you win, I did suggest you buy them, after all. 😉

These were inspired by Amy Tan who has an amazing clothing line that’s all hand stitched, and she also has stitched tags she sells. Krista and I thought we could make our own!

So, here’s my tag. When you’re done admiring :), go here and leave Krista some “love” (haha!).

Supplies

Pretty simple supplies for this one: a tag, a pencil (my fun old school ones!), a paper piercing tool or push pin, and a needle and thread. I think twine would be pretty cool – textural and rustic looking, and baker’s twine would give it a neat look as well. I used DMC embroidery floss since I used to do quite a bit of cross stitching and have a ton of colours!

I also used a Stampin’ Up! Mat Pack that allowed me to keep the lines of holes straight and evenly spaced. The Tim Holtz Design Ruler has the same thing built in, but neither are necessary – you could eyeball it easily.

First, draw your words with a pencil, or trace your shape. I punched a small heart from a sticky note, laid it on the tag, and traced around it to get my shape. Again, you could just eyeball it instead.

Next, punch your holes. Don’t put them too close together or you’ll tear the paper when you pull the floss through. That’s where the piercing template came in handy – holes that are evenly spaced but not too close together.

As you can see, I didn’t hit my pencil lines exactly, they were just a guide.

Once you have everything drawn out and the holes punched, erase your pencil lines – they don’t look so nice on your finished product!

I used two different types of stitches for this one – a backstitch and a satin stitch. For stitching words or outlines, a backstitch is the easiest and most common stitch. The satin stitch is for filling in open spaces, like the heart. Both are super simple to do, trust me!

Pick your thread, twine or floss and start stitching! For the backstitch, you sew backwards to the direction you’re sewing (click the link, it’s easier than it sounds!). Sew So, you go up one hole…

backstitch - step 1

…then back down the previous hole.

backstitch - step 2

With the satin stitch, you simply do one long stitch across your shape, then do another next to it until you fill in the space.

satin stitch

When you have all your stitching done, you should have a tag that looks like this:

This was the very first time I’ve ever attempted this, so you can see that it really is super easy.

Since I wanted mist on my tag I did that before I started stitching. I didn’t want to discolour on the light pink heart.

Now, just add the tag as is to a project, layout, or card, or embellish it further.

completed tag

The other thing I did with my tag was to draw a light pink line around the heart to better define the shape.

Go have fun and try this one out! And don’t forget to leave me a link if you do try it –  I’d love to see what you come up with!

But first, don’t forget to check out Krista’s tutorial for her “love” tag – it’s *lovely*!

Also, Happy Birthday to my friend Heidi – I hope this is the beginning of your best year ever! Love you!

Birthday cake, Chocolate, Kiddies, kids

(This is my second post today – scroll down to see the Moxie Fab World Trigger Card !)

I brought home what was left of the two birthday cakes I received at the class yesterday (there was precious little left, it was a room full of women!) and the kiddies had it after lunch today as a special treat. Of course, seeing as tomorrow is the real birthday, we’ll have special treats then too!

Anyway, everyone got covered in chocolate and wanted silly pictures taken – all except P who is a pro poser and even with a chocolate face looked fabulous in her picture!

M and G however, well, they’re just silly!

Moxie Fab World: Home Sweet Home

Distress Ink, EK Success, Fiskars, Hero Arts, Moxie Fab World, October Afternoon, Papertrey Ink, Studio Calico

I was going to post about the first 2012 Yearlong Class we had yesterday (complete with two birthday cakes for me!), but when I saw the Tuesday Trigger at Moxie Fab World last night, I had to play along!

We’ll talk about the class on Wednesday.

I loved the red and blue polka dots, the little bird and the woodgrain door. This is what I came up with, while managing to keep all those elements.

Tuesday Trigger: Home Sweet Home card

The door opens…

… so you can see the sweet little bird inside!

I used an old Hero Arts stamp set (I cut the crown off the bird – yes, I cut up my stamps!), and a Papertrey Ink sentiment. Bazzill and Stampin’ Up! cardstock, with October Afternoon SprINKlers, Cavallini paper tape, Ranger Distress Inks, EK Success circle punch, Studio Calico/Hero Arts stamp set, and a large Fiskars cloud punch to finish it off.

Hope you enjoy it, head on over to Moxie Fab World and play along yourself!

Sleepover

Family, Kiddies, kids, Sleepover

M is at her first away from home sleepover tonight. Now, she’s slept at Nanny and Poppy’s, and at Nana’s (where she kicked Grandpa Ken out of bed and took his spot!), and at Poppy and Debbie’s. But never at a friend’s house.

Tonight is the night.

Remember a couple of weeks ago we had P & C here for a few nights? Well, the girls got the bug and have been asking to do it again ever since. We called P today but she wanted to stay home and have M over there. Two seconds later the bags were packed, the toys collected, and I was being dragged out the door.

Both girls asked, “How many sleeps can she stay?” I don’t think they were happy with the answer of, “Only one!”

I dropped off one very excited girl to another very excited girl and they disappeared – no goodbye, no kiss, no nothing!

I don’t think we’ll be getting a phone call to go pick her up anytime soon!

Have fun, M, but stop growing up already!

Cats, kids

Our cats are crazy.

You think they would know by now – if they’re going to nap on the couch among the kiddies, they will obviously need to be “cozy” while doing so!

Naptime

And of course, you have to have a teddy!

Kiddies, kids, Simple Stories, Year Long Album

Oh yes, it’s Friday….

Thank goodness!

I’m sleepy today, up until about 2am working on a little something:

Then M had kinderstart this morning. And when I say she’s like cold molasses in the morning, I mean she’s like it’s frozen – she ain’t movin’!

Then lunch took forever, so it was late…

Should I continue?

Here’s hoping this evening is less…. Just less.

Sunday is the first 2012 Yearlong Class! The paper is a.maz.ing. Really. And the kit is chock full. And it has a great surprise! I left a hint about what it is somewhere today, can anyone guess? 😉

1. D was just approved to teach a course at College of the North Atlantic in Studio Photography Techniques Level 1 – very excited with and for him, especially since he developed the class himself! If you’re in and around St. John’s, it runs Monday nights from May 7 – June 18, with a break May 21 for the long weekend, and it will be in a full photography studio. If I knew anything about f-stops and apertures, I’d probably be doing it myself… 🙂

2. It’s finally a nice winter’s day! No wind, fairly warm (for winter!), enough snow but not too much… Perfect! Which means cabin fever has been relieved and the kiddies enjoyed a good time in the backyard going down the slide (yeah, never got around to putting it away in the fall!), shovelling with the sand shovels (ditto), and throwing snow in each others faces.

3. My nephew placed third in his Kiwanis Music Competition for piano! Way to go N! We’re so proud of you!

4. Is there any need? I know we don’t let them outdoors, but you’d swear they were mistreated prisoners willing to do anything to escape.

Rosie - escape artist wannabe

5. I’ve decided to do Project 365 (well, that would be Project 366 this year!) I know you’re thinking, “Little late to the game, sister!” but, although I have pics for almost every day so far this year, I’m going to start on my birthday at the end of the month. I figured that since I take all these pics anyway, I might as well look organized and committed to a project, right?

6. I have one more set of instructions to write for the new Yearlong Album Class on Sunday – and I have to head into The Paperie tonight to get them all kitted up. We were worried that a special addition to the kit was going to be late, but it arrived just in time – yay!

Hope you’re all enjoying your day, wherever that may be! And if it’s a warm place, please invite me to visit – I’ll beg if necessary! 🙂

M and her funny sayings…

Family, Kiddies, kids, M and her funny sayings...

Last night, M broke the tail on one of her dress up costumes. We told her the elastic had snapped and it couldn’t be fixed.

She’s nothing if not stubborn so she tied a knot in it and said, “Look! I fixed it! I have mad skills!”

Hug Life

American Crafts, Amy Tan, Amy Tangerine, Bowring Park, Daybook, Paperie, ScrapBook, Thickers, Year Long Album

(EDIT: Today seems to be the day to showcase crop night LO’s! Check out this and this.)

Friday night I went to a crop night at my LSS, The Paperie. It’s always the third Friday night of the month and it’s always fun and yummy – great combination!

This time we talked and talked and talked and laughed and laughed and laughed – and actually got some scrapbooking done too!

One of the projects I was picking away at was the Hug Life Daybook from Amy Tangerine for American Crafts (a larger version of the one I tore apart for this LO).

These are the best mini albums – surprisingly big, as in tons of pages, and very eclectic.

There are pockets and grid papers and tickets and rounded papers and scalloped papers….. So different, so very fun.

I am using the November kit from the Paperie and I *love* it. The papers, the stamp, the thickers, the mixtape – awesome!

Just before the kit was released, we spent a day in Bowring Park with the kiddies taking pictures of them in the leaves. Then we headed to Lester’s Farm for pumpkin pics and baked goodies, along with yummy fresh veggies.

The pictures from that day perfectly matched the colours of the the kit papers and so instead of a LO, I decided to do a mini album.

It’s still not finished, but I’m loving what I have done. The pictures are most definitely the focus, not the papers or embellishments, and  there’s plenty of room to do journaling as I go along.

So…. so far, so good. It will be a fun one to flip through when I’m done. And because the different papers make it so easy, it’s a good one to poke at when midnight rolls around and the brain has gone to mush!

My plans for naptime today and this evening revolve around writing instructions for the 2012 Yearlong album – the first class is Sunday. Hate the writing instructions part – love the teaching it part!

Enjoy the cold today if that’s your cup of tea. Me? I’m freezing!
