techniques, Things on Thursday, Tutorials, Week in the Life

It’s been a while since I’ve done a Things on Thursday post but a couple of items caught my eye recently and I wanted to share!

1. Julie Fei-Fan Blazer showed a tutorial today on her blog about how to do this boxed letter technique:

joyful - Balzer Designs

The finished LO looks awesome so you should all check that out!

2. Summer CHA products are being launched and although I wasn’t in love with much, there are a couple of things I must have. Like these Archival ink pads by Wendy Vecchi for Ranger:

Archival_FernGreen - Wndy Vecchi

And this small Dylusions Art Journal:

SmallDyJournal

And I’m looking forward to the Amy Tangerine Cut & Paste line from American crafts:

cut&paste - Amy Tangerine

3. October Afternoon does Monday Challenges on their blog and this particular one is really fun:

Monday Challenge - OA

Click over and play, if you want a bit of scrapping inspiration!

4. We just had an awesome weekend at the Paperie with Dina Wakley (much more on that later!) and I’m already thinking ahead to new people we can get in! ๐Ÿ™‚ So Wendy and Janna, how about Ronda Palazzari? Love this project!

5. Finally, Ali Edwards has announced her Week in the Life dates for this year – and it’s coming up soon! I loved this project last year and I’m even more excited this year – there’s something fun coming!

Big Picture Classes, ICAD, Things on Thursday

1. I’m sure most of you have heard of/seen this video about Zach Sobiech. Even if you’ve already watched it, it’s worth another view.

2. Donna Downey is up to 30,000 Facebook fans and so, as a thank you, she has done a free mixed media video. Of course it’s awesome, so go take advantage and enjoy!

3. I just signed up for this Big Picture Classes workshop taught by Claudine Hellmuth. I love BPC (their classes and workshop are great) and I love Claudine Hellmuth (such a fun style) so I’m really looking forward to this class!

4. Another year, another ICAD (Index Card a Day)! Last year I managed to get 52 of the 61 done – this year I’m determined to do them all plus the ones I missed last year! I love this challenge, it’s a great way to play with new product, learn new techniques and just have fun. Plus, the Flickr group is incredible!

5. Jennifer at Simple Scrapper has just announced a great new summer class – and it’s FREE!

stories of the summer

Plus, when you sign up for this 4×6 mini album class, you get videos on how to put it all together and complete it this summer, and the option to get Jennifer’s Summer Stories Toolbox of digital stamps and brushes. Let me just say – get the toolbox!

summer stories - loving summer

summer stories - best moment

Don’t you love the font choices?!?

Canvas, Christmas card, marriage equality, Mixed media, Studio Calico, Things on Thursday

Before you start reading this list, I want to say that there is no rhyme nor reason to the order of things. I write this post over the course of the week as things pop up and so sometimes the important things (see #3) end up in the middle rather than at the top. Yes, that goes against everything I ever learned in English and Writing classes but that’s just the way it is around here – my blog, my rules! ๐Ÿ™‚ The reason I mention this now is so you all know that the list is not in order of importance or relevance, it’s just the way the week went! So enjoy and read them all – don’t skip the middle parts!

1. I signed up for this class as soon as I heard about it. I missed the first one and kicked myself over it so I’m really looking forward to this new one!

pop off the page

2. I’ve been given a couple of blog awards in the past week or so. I never really know what to do with those (they almost make me uncomfortable, is that weird?) but it’s exciting that people like me – they really like me! More on those next week.

3. I came across this in the WordPress Freshly Pressed blog post. Awesome post. Go read it. Now. I’ll wait! ๐Ÿ™‚

marriage equality

(Musak playing, Jeopardy theme song playing…)

Did you read it yet? Good! Moving along…

4. Last November I had a card published in Create: Christmas Cards. But I haven’t submitted anything since. And because all the calls right now are for September/October that means it’s been almost a year since I’ve submitted anything. Time to get back on that horse, I think!

Merry Christmas

5. One reason I haven’t been trying to get published is that I’m doing very few scrapbook layouts or cards, apart from the ones for Simple Scrapper, and have been concentrating on canvases and mixed media. Here’s a peek of a canvas I did for a blog hop next week and for a class I’m teaching at The Paperie retreat at the end of the month. I like it so much that I might actually make something else for the blog hop and submit this – we’ll have to see.

Quilt, Things on Thursday

1. I’ll be back tomorrow with sneaks of the technique tags I’ll be teaching in my card class during the Kelly Purkey weekend – it’s almost here!

2. There are only two Things on Thursday today because this one is big….

…I’m making a quilt!

I’ve wanted to do this for years but I’m a master procrastinator so it just never happened. Finally, my friend Marg who, among many other arty things, also quilts, offered to teach a few of us! This is the first one we’re making, just a little strip quilt, but I’m pretty impressed with how straight my seams are and how well I lined them up on either side of the quilt – they’re off a bit but I expect all of you to overlook that part! ๐Ÿ™‚

DSC_9841

Doesn’t it look like the perfect size for a baby quilt? I’m really hoping I don’t mess the rest of it up because my plan is to give this very special first ever sarathings quilt to a wonderful friend. She’s expecting her first baby and I may actually be more excited for her than I was for myself – really, I’m that thrilled!

She was also one of the very first people to meet little Miss M ย – my quilt top holder-upper helper:

DSC_9842

So I think my friend deserves something from me that is as fabulous as she is. Please tell me the colours are good for either a boy or girl though honestly, I don’t really care either way!

Wish me luck on the rest and cross your fingers that I don’t destroy it along the way!

S.

DIY coasters, Instagram, punctuation, washi tape feathers

I haven’t been on the ball at all since Christmas, but here’s to trying to get back in the groove! Hope you like some of these fun things I’ve spotted this week:

1. This tutorial for making your own feathers is awesome – I’m totally making a zillion patterned feathers for a project soon!

credit: Riikka Kovasin

2. This is an awesome way to show off your pictures and make them useful at the same time – polaroid inspired coasters! I’ve made stamped coasters before but I think I’m going to have to try this DIY project out. Who doesn’t have pictures they love but are hidden away? Bring them into the light, my friends!

3. If you’re an instagram fan (and these days, who isn’t?) then you need to check out this deal. A 60 picture photo book and all you need to pay is the postage? Bring it on, I’m there! But it starts Saturday morning (February 23) and is only good for 24 hours so don’t wait!

4. I love Miss Four Eyes. If we lived close to each other and I actually knew her and was single and into girls, she might be the one. I haven’t told her that yet, she might think I was creepy or something. But love her, I do. And I especially love this post – I laughed out loud several times. (warning: She’s not your gentle, sweet, innocent blogger; she blogs in the nude. You’ve been forewarned if you choose to continue to her site and laugh hysterically.)

5. Keeping up with the funny – check out “8 New Punctuation Marks We Desperately Need.” Personally, I’ve been waiting for the sarcasm font but the Sarcastises will do just fine, thank you!

Have a fun and creative one!

Canon Selphy, December Daily, Kelly Purkey, Online Card Classes, Tutorials

1. Krista posted a sneak on her blog of a fun new thing the Creative Team will be doing for the Paperie Retreat. As I mentioned yesterday, I’m so excited to get started on mine – I think tonight I’ll actually have the time!

credit: Krista Wells

Check out her blog post for a larger sneak peek!

2. I signed up for this Online Card Class ages ago and am finally getting a minute here and there to watch the videos. As expected, it’s fantastic and I’m getting some great ideas and inspiration for a special card class I’m teaching at The Paperie in the next month or so – before Christmas, anyway!

3. I’m seriously debating asking some family member for an early Christmas gift. I asked for this last year and got a giant photo printer instead which is awesome, but not really that portable! ๐Ÿ™‚ I’d love to have this in time for the retreat…

4. There’s a super cute and easy gift box tutorial here that is great for baked gifts – just line it with some parchment or waxed paper and you’re good to go! Also, I think it would look really sweet if you punched holes in the top and tied it with ribbon instead of the button closure.

credit: Gloria Stengel

5. Kelly Purkeyย is throwing her hat in the December Daily kit ring and I couldn’t be more excited! The sneaks she’s shown so far are….. yummy, just really, really, yummy! The colours are gorgeous, the 4×6 stamp set is perfect, and she’s promises it’s going to be a great and reasonable price. Hopefully, preorders will be up today, along with a major sneak/reveal so I’m stalking her blog and twitter feed….. ๐Ÿ™‚

Seriously? Could they be any better? I think not.

Dylusions, Lawn Fawn, Lego, Project Life, The Crafter's Workshop

1. I’m still keeping up with Project Life. Although I’m only in Week 7 right now, that’s huge for me! I barely made it through Week in the Life and two years in a row I quit a few days into December Daily. I’m planning to actually blog my PL spreads, it just hasn’t happened yet. ๐Ÿ™‚

2. I love Lego and thankfully, my kiddies love Lego too! Whenever I buy them a new minifig or building set, D asks me if it’s for them or me….. It’s theirs, but only because no one will buy me my own set!

Love the Holiday Gift Shop and all the fun stocking stuffers and exclusives. And I especially love the 2012 holiday house – very fun!

Winter Village Cottage

3. I love this Lawn Fawn video – the pumpkins are the cutest and I have idea for Christmas now too! Plus, Chari has a couple of super smart tips she shares.

credit: Chari Moss

4. I’m seeing more and more bloggers and tweeters showing and using their Dylusions Journal and I”m sad, sad, sad that I have yet to hold one in my hands. Please tell they’ll be here soon, Paperie!

5. I was featured on the Crafter’s Workshop blog last week – very exciting for me since I love, love, love their stencils. After trying some other stencils, I love them even more – the designs and quality are, by far, the best out there. And, as a bonus, the owner Jamie is fabulous!

The Crafter’s Workshop class with Jamie Echt

I was lucky enough to meet and take a class from her in Orlando and she really is one of the easiest people to talk to and super friendly. Plus, you can tell she really believes in the product she’s putting out there on the market. And to put a cherry on top, she shared a little tidbit of exciting news with me during our chat at the Make and Takes on who may be a new stencil designer for them! ๐Ÿ™‚

Looking forward to finishing up Project Life spreads this weekends, hopefully with some friends, and we have a 40th Birthday Party to attend – fun weekend ahead!

FarmHouse Paper Company

1. Did you all miss me? ๐Ÿ™‚ I’ll say yes, you did!

I had an awesome time in Orlando where I took a bunch of classes and workshops for the Paperie. Trust me, there are some a. ma. zing. classes planned so if you live in NL or want to plan a fun trip here to visit, there will be a weekend full of classes early in the new year that you won’t want to miss!

Just saying, great Christmas gift my friends…..

2. I saw and fell in love with a new line while in Orlando. FarmHouse Paper Company debuted at Summer CHA and the quality is fabulous! And you all know how much I love a mini album right? Well, the ones they have are spectacular, hint hint! ๐Ÿ™‚

credit: FarmHouse Paper Company

Oh, and my picture made it on their blog – check out how much fun we were all having!

3. Today is the 12th and I’m sure you all know what that means….

Pictures! Who’s going to join me in taking 12 on Twelve? This is one of my favourite projects, love this little clip of everyday life once a month!

4. I’m very excited to go out with my scrappy friends tonight! A couple of times a year we get ourselves organized and go for dinner. So far, we have a list of 15 – I hope Oppidan is ready for us, we can get a little rowdy! ๐Ÿ™‚

5. I’m looking forward to a great weekend. I’m taking a class from Rae Lynn on Saturday (check out my Paperie Pick blog post on Classes, it should be up later today)

design and photo credit: Rae Lynn O’Keefe

…and Darrell is doing a photowalk. Hopefully the sunny fall weather will hold and we’ll get some time feeding the ducks in the park too!

Hope you all have a great weekend, whatever you’re doing!

1. As you’re reading this I”m flying to Orlando! Yay! I’m headed off for four days of classes and workshop with the best in the industry at the Collins Rep show. I’m excited – the show in Houston last year was fabulous so I know what toย anticipateย this yearย andย it makes me even more eager to be there!

2. Aussie Scrap Source has a great tutorial on altering pictures with paint. I definitely have to try out the first technique, the sample looks amazing!

credit: Aussie Scrap Source

3. I love this card by Shari Carroll. It looks fabulous and is so easy! I took a Hero Arts class from her in Houston last year and she and Jennifer McGuire were amazing! Unfortunately, neither are there this year but I’m sure the HA teachers will live up to my expectations!

credit: Shari Carroll

4. Julie Fei-Fan Balzer is up to her creative genius again! She has an awesome ย tutorial on how to make your own vellum leaves – a must try!

5. There’s a few videos here on the new Ranger Metallic Distress Stains. I don’t think I need to tell you that I’m excited to be trying those this weekend with Tim Holtz! ๐Ÿ™‚

I’ll be away from blog land until late next week but look for a full post then about the Collins Rep Show!
