Spiders and bats and Halloween fun!

I love Halloween. Love. It.

I love Christmas more but don’t like the crafting aspect as much – weird.

There’s just something about making ghosts and bats and spiders that makes me happy so the other day we made some creepy crawlies while the kiddos had a Professional Development Day off school.

kids and bats

See how happy Molly is about getting her picture taken? Haha!

Here’s the three of ours together (Poppy had already taken hers home):

bat trio

I went with regular googly eyes but the kids wanted coloured ones, of course! I’ve almost run out of my round coloured eyes but found some oval ones the other day (for you local peeps who have been asking, I found them at the dollar store in Mount Pearl!) and I think they look pretty awesome! We obviously used egg cartons, black paint, and googly eyes. For the wings I had some sticky back felt but paper would work just as well.

We also made spiders but I only have a picture of mine:

spiderIsn’t he cute? I had the idea and wanted to make him *now* but had no pipe cleaners so we painted wooden skewers and broke them up for legs – I actually like how it looks that way! He and Mister Bat:

bathave become two of my faves! Now, to come up with a new ghost idea….

Cheers!

background: The kiddos are in the basement trying to get rid of a big creepy crawly bug of some kind…..

Gabe: I’m freaking out!

Molly: No, Gabe! You have to save us!

Gabe: But I’m really freaking out! (he sounds pretty excited to me. Just saying. ๐Ÿ™‚ )

Molly: You’re Gabe the Brave, you can do it!

(Gabe comes upstairs): I need socks and shoes.

Me: Why?

Gabe (looking determined and thrilled): So I can squash it dead! Yeah! (insert fist pump here)

Gabe the Brave - bug killer extraordinaire

Gabe the Brave – bug killer extraordinaire

They’re a blood thirsty crew, my lot.

For the record, he squashed it dead *and* cleaned up the bug guts!

Party hair and a WINNER!

Big Picture Classes, giveaway winner

Almost every morning Molly and I have a fight about her hair. I want it up, or at least back in a hair band. She doesn’t want it brushed.

So imagine my surprise this morning when she declared that she wanted “Party Hair.”

What’s that, you say? Good question. It’s the same one I asked.

It turns out that “Party Hair” has one side up in a bun like a balloon and the other side left out like streamers.

I saw this all going terribly badly. However I forged ahead and, being the genius that I am, got it done. We had the bun/balloon on one side and for the “streamers” I twisted the other side up. It almost went downhill at that point but when I assured her that no one would ever let streamers just fall straight down, theyย always have to be twisted up to look more party-like, it was a go.

And here’s the final product – she was pleased as punch:

party hairPhew. Morning crisis #1 averted.

Now, to share a little something else with you all:

Haha! Just a fun little sneak of the Paperie June Card Kit – I went outside the box on this one, my friends!

Gabe and his funny sayings…

G and his funny sayings..., Gabe, kids

Gabe had a little adventure and lunch out with my best friend late last week – just the two of them. Over lunch they were talking about favourite foods.

G: I love peanut butter.

S (my friend): We don;t have peanut butter. It would make Rachel sick and she would have to go to the hospital.

G: Oh. Well, if Molly picked up a fork and stabbed me in the eye, I’d have to go to the hospital too!

I’m not quite sure where I got him…

Handprint Advent Tree

02 Monday Dec 2013

Advent calendar, Christmas, Crafts

Well, it’s the beginning of December and around here that means the beginning of Christmas crafts! We did a fun and easy one today that included some paint – always a winner with little kiddies!

First, I painted everyone’s hands green and stamped them on watercolour paper to make trees. I definitely recommend Tempera paints for this, they easily wash off surfaces, clothes, and skin!

advent tree - hand prints

Once the trees were done everyone got a paintbrush and were told to paint a bunch of colours without mixing them into mud – and they actually did it! Mud colour is the norm around here for some reason…

Although the paints dry quickly, a lot of water was flowing on these so I gave them a quick blast with my heat gun to speed up the process. Then, with “help”, I punched 1″ and 3/4″ circles from the paper to make ornaments.I also cut a star from some of the yellow painted sections. All in all, we had 23 circles and one star per child which they then stuck to a sheet of glue dots. We started with this:

advent tree - big thighs hannah

and this:

advent tree - big thighs gabe

And ended up with these:

advent tree - decorations hannah

And these:

advent tree - decorations Gabe

And now we’re all ready for the countdown! Since today is the second they got to pick out and stick on two ornaments, saving the star until Christmas Eve.

advent tree - finished

Cute, hey? He insisted on making a funny face – no way was I getting a reasonable picture out of him today!

There’s still plenty of time to make your own – it might even be fun for the whole family to have trees!

Halloween!

Halloween

So. Halloween was pretty epic this year.

halloween - my two

We had a fall fairy who morphed into a pirate for the actual door-to-door part of the festivities:

halloween - fairy1

and Terry the Fox,who carried an awesome sign with him.

halloween - fox1

There were of course the parties at school, and Sparks, and we naturally had one here!

halloween - snacks

And it was very loud in my little house with all those hyped up kiddies.

halloween - group1

Then the trick or treating began and my two were 100%, wholly into it this year.

halloween - trick or treating

To make it even more fun, their friend J went to a few houses with them and he was so excited that he was literally jumping up and down on the doorsteps!

batman

Isn’t he the cutest?

A few visits to friends, and we ended the (very cold) evening at my Dad’s, as usual, for a late supper. Fun times, a fair amount of sugar, and two very tired little people.

It was awesome.
