Halloween is always my favourite time of the year to make crafts with the kids – there’s so many fun possibilities! This year though, their ideas completely outshone any that I had!

The first thing we made were these fun dimensional pumpkins:

pumpkins

I cut the pieces for the faces and the kids stuck them on themselves. Since I made these with the little ones, ages 1-3, we had some funny positioning!

On the back I got everyone to stamp their handprint:

pumpkin handprintsThe next craft was made by Gabe at Michael’s during one of their weekend kids craft times:

ghost pumpkin

Our local farm sells white Ghost Pumpkins and they’re always his favourite so of course that was the colour craft pumpkin he picked to use. I love all the giant eyes and that crazy green mouth! He also made a point of putting purple pom poms over the eyes for eyebrows, lol! And the antennae were his last minute flash of genius.

Finally, I handed out green plates one day so everyone could make witch faces. Gabe and Hannah decided that they just had to have Witch Cats instead:

witch catGabe is a fan of odd sized googly eyes. I wish I had a picture of Hannah’s – she added a broom for her cat to ride on!

A few days later Heidi asked to make one too, but she wanted a cow witch:

witch cowAnd hers needed teeth. As her mom said, it looks like an Angry Bird!

I have some fun ideas up my sleeve for Christmas, let’s hope we get the time for them to pan out!

Cheers!

Book of Me – Kid Style!

I was making a LO for something special (check back tomorrow!) and Gabe, of course, wanted in on the action. I set him up with a sheet of cardstock, his box of supplies and told him to go to town!

gabe is 5

Don’t you love that moustache? He asked for “the right kind of picture pen” to draw it on! Also, he obviously likes the shimmer as much as his mama does – not only did he add silver alphas and use a silver gel pen:

gabe is 5 title

He also insisted on ColorShine mist and star sequins:

gabe is 5 - shine

I did the mist tapping – I let him one other time and I’m still cleaning up the mess, lol! – but he told me what colour and exactly where it needed to go.

Naturally, when Molly came home from school, she had to do her own LO:

baby me

Unlike me, she likes the multiple photo, interactive idea:

baby me- open

And finally, a sneak peek of Gabe’s birthday plans. I borrowed a stamp set from my friend Cathy to make the invites and Gabe wanted to make a poster. Apart from me lining up the buildings along the bottom, he did everything else himself – I think he’s going to be a darn fine stamper!

superheroes

See you all early tomorrow for something fun! It’s also something I haven’t done here in a while! ๐Ÿ™‚

Cheers!

The Paperie | January Card Kit (part 2)

Apparently, I loved the January Card kit:

leftovers

Yup. That and two envelopes are all I have left. Garbage scraps, nothing more.

Gabe and I sat down because he wanted to make something for The Paperie. I hadn’t used the wood veneer ribbons or the envelopes so I snagged a pink envelope and I gave him what I had left. Gabe wanted to make an envelope and bookmark for some one special. ๐Ÿ™‚

i love you front

He had fun with the stamps – the flower he coloured in with markers and he fell in love with the Gold Delicata ink when he stamped the chevrons. Which meant he needed to use it again for the speech balloon:

i love you back

He insisted on a pretty bookmark so used the small Prima Valentine’s girl from my stash for it:

bookmark front

And he signed and stamped the back:

bookmark back

My creation is completely boring in comparison:

valentine envelope front

I plan to pop a special note in here for Molly and maybe a gift card for us to go do something together. I added a speech balloon to the flap for easy opening:

valentine envelope back

And that’s it, no more January card kit shares – there simply isn’t enough product left to play with! I think there are more at the store to buy so make sure you give them a call and snag one while you can!

Cheers!

Sara

P.S. The other projects I made from the kit can be found here and here!

A Reindeer here, a Snowman there….

It’s that time of year again friends – crafty kids time! I’ve got a couple to show you today, for a couple of different age ranges.

First up is our reindeer, inspired by my friend Krista. This is great fun for the older kids who can help each other trace out their hands and forearms and then cut them out. For the younger ones you’ll have to do the cutting and assembling but they think it’s funny when you tickle them by tracing!

I used black construction paper for the “antlers” and made sure to trace their forearms so we have room to stick them onto the head:

reindeer antlers

The face was just brown construction paper cut into a wonky oval shape:

reindeer head

Add some googly eyes, a glitter nose, and a mouth and you’re done!

reindeer

We also made snowmen. I bought a bunch of styrofoam cups for Halloween a couple of years ago to make ghostsย and I thought they would be great for snowmen too!

For Heidi, who’s two and a little bit impatient ๐Ÿ™‚ I simply drew a line around the top of the cup and told her to colour it in for his hat (she picked out all the colours):

snowman colouring

Then sheย we added eyes, a nose, and a mouth to call him good (I poked a hole in the top of the cup to thread string so we could hang him).

snowman head

For the older kids, I strung three cups together, separating them with buttons tied on the string to hold them apart.

snowman assembly

They added the hat to the top cup, then eyes, nose, mouth, arms, and buttons.

snowman layered

Isn’t he fun? He wiggles around when a breeze hits him, lol! This happens to be the prototype that I made with glitter glue so you can see that you can really add all sorts of fun stuff if you feel so inclinedย – my two added real buttons down his front!ย It just occurred to me that you could colour the lip of the top cup to make a scarf too.

Anyone else out there making crafts this Christmas? Link me up – I’m running out of ideas!

Cheers!

Card Kit, kid's crafts, kidart, The Paperie

The Paperie has a brand new card kit out and it’s geared towards kids! To be honest though, I love it and had a ton of fun creating with it so trust me, it’s also adult friendly!

10

The best thing about this card kit? My kiddies were “guest designers” for it and they were thrilled!

Since I wrote a couple of blog posts for The Paperie showcasing all the projects we made, I’ll send you over there to check it all out – enjoy!

Spiders and bats and Halloween fun!

I love Halloween. Love. It.

I love Christmas more but don’t like the crafting aspect as much – weird.

There’s just something about making ghosts and bats and spiders that makes me happy so the other day we made some creepy crawlies while the kiddos had a Professional Development Day off school.

kids and bats

See how happy Molly is about getting her picture taken? Haha!

Here’s the three of ours together (Poppy had already taken hers home):

bat trio

I went with regular googly eyes but the kids wanted coloured ones, of course! I’ve almost run out of my round coloured eyes but found some oval ones the other day (for you local peeps who have been asking, I found them at the dollar store in Mount Pearl!) and I think they look pretty awesome! We obviously used egg cartons, black paint, and googly eyes. For the wings I had some sticky back felt but paper would work just as well.

We also made spiders but I only have a picture of mine:

spiderIsn’t he cute? I had the idea and wanted to make him *now* but had no pipe cleaners so we painted wooden skewers and broke them up for legs – I actually like how it looks that way! He and Mister Bat:

bathave become two of my faves! Now, to come up with a new ghost idea….

Cheers!

We had a big day here yesterday – baking and crafts! Gabe and Hannah were in their glee.

First, we made peanut butter chocolate chip cookies – a favourite with all of us. I love them because they’re easy and have little cleanup. The kids love them because they get to squish them with a fork:

cookies - h&g

and they bake in only a few minutes!

After that we made a fun Valentine’s craft, with hand prints of course. I think I’m completely unable to do a children’s craft without handprints – it’s an issue.

This one involved not only inking up hands, but feet as well.

valentine - h&g

Can you see the prints? Their hands formed the “head” heart and their feet, the “body.” We then used their thumb prints to make little hearts for the “hands” and “feet.” I traced out the heart shapes and then Gabe and Hannah cut them all out, stuck them together and added googly eyes. It’s not a good craft if googly eyes are not included!

Hannah, as always, was great to pose for me:

valentine - hannah

Gabe, well, not so much!

valentine - gabe

While we were doing all that, Heidi decided it was reading time.

reading - heidi

All in all, I think they had a good day.

Tomorrow I’ve got a post for you about the canvas class I taught this past weekend – I even had one person tell me it was the best class they’ve ever ย taken! I’ll give myself a pat on the back for that one, thank you very much! ๐Ÿ™‚

Handprint Advent Tree

02 Monday Dec 2013

Advent calendar, Christmas, Crafts

Well, it’s the beginning of December and around here that means the beginning of Christmas crafts! We did a fun and easy one today that included some paint – always a winner with little kiddies!

First, I painted everyone’s hands green and stamped them on watercolour paper to make trees. I definitely recommend Tempera paints for this, they easily wash off surfaces, clothes, and skin!

advent tree - hand prints

Once the trees were done everyone got a paintbrush and were told to paint a bunch of colours without mixing them into mud – and they actually did it! Mud colour is the norm around here for some reason…

Although the paints dry quickly, a lot of water was flowing on these so I gave them a quick blast with my heat gun to speed up the process. Then, with “help”, I punched 1″ and 3/4″ circles from the paper to make ornaments.I also cut a star from some of the yellow painted sections. All in all, we had 23 circles and one star per child which they then stuck to a sheet of glue dots. We started with this:

advent tree - big thighs hannah

and this:

advent tree - big thighs gabe

And ended up with these:

advent tree - decorations hannah

And these:

advent tree - decorations Gabe

And now we’re all ready for the countdown! Since today is the second they got to pick out and stick on two ornaments, saving the star until Christmas Eve.

advent tree - finished

Cute, hey? He insisted on making a funny face – no way was I getting a reasonable picture out of him today!

There’s still plenty of time to make your own – it might even be fun for the whole family to have trees!
