Halloween is always my favourite time of the year to make crafts with the kids – there’s so many fun possibilities! This year though, their ideas completely outshone any that I had!

The first thing we made were these fun dimensional pumpkins:

I cut the pieces for the faces and the kids stuck them on themselves. Since I made these with the little ones, ages 1-3, we had some funny positioning!

On the back I got everyone to stamp their handprint:

Our local farm sells white Ghost Pumpkins and they’re always his favourite so of course that was the colour craft pumpkin he picked to use. I love all the giant eyes and that crazy green mouth! He also made a point of putting purple pom poms over the eyes for eyebrows, lol! And the antennae were his last minute flash of genius.

Finally, I handed out green plates one day so everyone could make witch faces. Gabe and Hannah decided that they just had to have Witch Cats instead:

witch catGabe is a fan of odd sized googly eyes. I wish I had a picture of Hannah’s – she added a broom for her cat to ride on!

A few days later Heidi asked to make one too, but she wanted a cow witch:

I have some fun ideas up my sleeve for Christmas, let’s hope we get the time for them to pan out!

Cheers!

You know how you always love your kids but some days it just really overwhelms you? He just slayed me today.

And check out his talent:

So in love with this boy.

A Reindeer here, a Snowman there….

It’s that time of year again friends – crafty kids time! I’ve got a couple to show you today, for a couple of different age ranges.

First up is our reindeer, inspired by my friend Krista. This is great fun for the older kids who can help each other trace out their hands and forearms and then cut them out. For the younger ones you’ll have to do the cutting and assembling but they think it’s funny when you tickle them by tracing!

I used black construction paper for the “antlers” and made sure to trace their forearms so we have room to stick them onto the head:

reindeer antlers

The face was just brown construction paper cut into a wonky oval shape:

Add some googly eyes, a glitter nose, and a mouth and you’re done!

We also made snowmen. I bought a bunch of styrofoam cups for Halloween a couple of years ago to make ghosts and I thought they would be great for snowmen too!

For Heidi, who’s two and a little bit impatient 🙂 I simply drew a line around the top of the cup and told her to colour it in for his hat (she picked out all the colours):

Then she we added eyes, a nose, and a mouth to call him good (I poked a hole in the top of the cup to thread string so we could hang him).

For the older kids, I strung three cups together, separating them with buttons tied on the string to hold them apart.

snowman assembly

They added the hat to the top cup, then eyes, nose, mouth, arms, and buttons.

Isn’t he fun? He wiggles around when a breeze hits him, lol! This happens to be the prototype that I made with glitter glue so you can see that you can really add all sorts of fun stuff if you feel so inclined – my two added real buttons down his front! It just occurred to me that you could colour the lip of the top cup to make a scarf too.

Anyone else out there making crafts this Christmas? Link me up – I’m running out of ideas!

Cheers!

The Paperie has a brand new card kit out and it’s geared towards kids! To be honest though, I love it and had a ton of fun creating with it so trust me, it’s also adult friendly!

The best thing about this card kit? My kiddies were “guest designers” for it and they were thrilled!

Since I wrote a couple of blog posts for The Paperie showcasing all the projects we made, I’ll send you over there to check it all out – enjoy!

We had a big day here yesterday – baking and crafts! Gabe and Hannah were in their glee.

First, we made peanut butter chocolate chip cookies – a favourite with all of us. I love them because they’re easy and have little cleanup. The kids love them because they get to squish them with a fork:

cookies - h&g

and they bake in only a few minutes!

After that we made a fun Valentine’s craft, with hand prints of course. I think I’m completely unable to do a children’s craft without handprints – it’s an issue.

This one involved not only inking up hands, but feet as well.

valentine - h&g

Can you see the prints? Their hands formed the “head” heart and their feet, the “body.” We then used their thumb prints to make little hearts for the “hands” and “feet.” I traced out the heart shapes and then Gabe and Hannah cut them all out, stuck them together and added googly eyes. It’s not a good craft if googly eyes are not included!

Hannah, as always, was great to pose for me:

valentine - hannah

Gabe, well, not so much!

valentine - gabe

While we were doing all that, Heidi decided it was reading time.

reading - heidi

All in all, I think they had a good day.

Tomorrow I’ve got a post for you about the canvas class I taught this past weekend – I even had one person tell me it was the best class they’ve ever  taken! I’ll give myself a pat on the back for that one, thank you very much! 🙂

Mini tutorial for the kiddies! | photo frame

birthday gift, Canvas, kid's crafts, Tuesday Tutorials

I have a home daycare. That means kiddies running around and kiddies mean parents with birthdays. And we always try to do something about birthdays around here!

Last week, one of the moms had a birthday and so her daughter (she’s two) and I sat down to make a gift. And I think it’s one of my faves so far!

Years ago I bought some great frames, I think they’re by EK Success, and of course, I forgot all about them. Such is the life of a crafter, hey? Anyway, I rediscovered them a couple of weeks ago and thought they would be perfect for this type of project. They’re actually primed canvas board frames, ready to alter, and I bought two different sizes – one has a 3.5×5 opening and the other, the one we used, has a 4×6 opening.

I sat Miss I down with some crayons and said,  “Have at it!.” And she coloured up a storm, loving every minute of it! While she was doing that, I looked for a picture of her and couldn’t find quite what I wanted.

So we took a break and had a little photo shoot to get the pic I was wanting for the frame. Then she went back to colouring and I sat down to edit her picture and although I tried not to, I just had to add an Ali Edwards overlay from Designer Digitals. Love those overlays just a bit too much!

Once the frame was coloured, I printed and added the photo and we were done! It was super easy, meaningful for the mom, and a great project for a two-year-old.

Pauline's frame

Isn’t that the sweetest face ever? Love her.

If you want to re-create this and can’t find frames, I’d suggest a primed canvas. All you would have to do is mount the picture to the top after the colouring or painting is done and you have a fabulous gift for aunts, uncles, grandparents – something that would mean so much for those hard to buy people!

Let me know what you do for gifts from kids – I need more ideas!

And remember – today is 12onTwelve and Pancake Day – yummy!
