Halloween

We had a fabulous Halloween this year! It all started over a week ago at the church, continued with Trick or Treating with friends, and ended with a sleepover at Poppy’s house. I think it was a success.

Molly decided months ago that she would be Pippi Longstocking, with Mr. Nilsson:

pippi

Gabe was a doctor:

the crewAnd had a ball going from house to house with the T-Rex following them all!

trexOur final stop, as always, was my dad’s house for supper and this year, a sleepover. Dad always dresses to match his pirate friend:

poppy caseThen I headed home to get ready for my own Halloween party at Emma’s house!

the adult crewEmma magically changed from a T-Rex to She-Ra and naturally had her sidekick, He-Man along for the ride. We were also joined by BatDad and Jen! And although, according to my brother, I look like a Popple, I am actually the Cheshire Cat. However, the popple idea is good!

So fun times all around – good food, lots of junk, and entertaining costumes – all that Halloween should be!

Cheers!

Halloween is always my favourite time of the year to make crafts with the kids – there’s so many fun possibilities! This year though, their ideas completely outshone any that I had!

The first thing we made were these fun dimensional pumpkins:

I cut the pieces for the faces and the kids stuck them on themselves. Since I made these with the little ones, ages 1-3, we had some funny positioning!

On the back I got everyone to stamp their handprint:

Our local farm sells white Ghost Pumpkins and they’re always his favourite so of course that was the colour craft pumpkin he picked to use. I love all the giant eyes and that crazy green mouth! He also made a point of putting purple pom poms over the eyes for eyebrows, lol! And the antennae were his last minute flash of genius.

Finally, I handed out green plates one day so everyone could make witch faces. Gabe and Hannah decided that they just had to have Witch Cats instead:

witch catGabe is a fan of odd sized googly eyes. I wish I had a picture of Hannah’s – she added a broom for her cat to ride on!

A few days later Heidi asked to make one too, but she wanted a cow witch:

I have some fun ideas up my sleeve for Christmas, let’s hope we get the time for them to pan out!

Cheers!

Trunk or Treat!

Halloween, trick or treat

This past Sunday our church held its annual pumpkin carving night. Yes, our church celebrates the pagan holidays. No, we don’t care, we actually love how spirited they are. Yes, we had an awesome time!

molly

This is always an event the kids look forward to – we bring our pumpkins, the church has templates, snacks, and games available, and we have fun. This year there were tattoos and face painting as well so the kids really had a great time.

gabe

Gabe picked out a template and after Darrell gutted both pumpkins, I drew the design on and he carved it out:

gabe pumpkin

Molly, of course, didn’t want a template, she wanted a bunny. Sitting. With kind of floppy ears. Friends, I cannot draw. Not even a little bit. Sigh. This is what I carved out for her – luckily, she was happy enough with it!

After the pumpkin carving all the kiddies (who had been told to dress up), lined up and went to the parking lot for a round of Trunk or Treating!

kids

Have you all heard of this? I hadn’t and it’s the most genius idea ever! All the cars lined up with their trunks (or the boot as my friend Emma and my stepfather would say!) pointing out into the parking lot.

Now, to backtrack a little, before the kids went up the adults were told to go get ready so Darrell went to open the trunk and get the candy ready. Then I got a text:

text

When we went out, I got it. These people are seriously *into* Halloween.

car2

All the trunks were decorated. There were lights, and decorations, and smoke machines (really) and people pretending to be decorations but would then come to life.

car1

One car had a seemingly benign setup – there were bags of chips so you could just take one from the trunk. And then a hand would grab you and yank you in. Molly and Gabe could not get enough of that one – they thought it was hilarious!

car

To say they had the best Halloween ever is not an exaggeration. The fact they get to go door to door and do it all again on Saturday? Icing on the cake, my friends, icing on the cake.

Cheers!

Halloween

So. Halloween was pretty epic this year.

halloween - my two

We had a fall fairy who morphed into a pirate for the actual door-to-door part of the festivities:

halloween - fairy1

and Terry the Fox,who carried an awesome sign with him.

halloween - fox1

There were of course the parties at school, and Sparks, and we naturally had one here!

halloween - snacks

And it was very loud in my little house with all those hyped up kiddies.

halloween - group1

Then the trick or treating began and my two were 100%, wholly into it this year.

halloween - trick or treating

To make it even more fun, their friend J went to a few houses with them and he was so excited that he was literally jumping up and down on the doorsteps!

batman

Isn’t he the cutest?

A few visits to friends, and we ended the (very cold) evening at my Dad’s, as usual, for a late supper. Fun times, a fair amount of sugar, and two very tired little people.

It was awesome.

Bats and pumpkins and mess – oh my!

Crafts, Halloween

On Monday we made our last Halloween decorations – we are now officially walking into and through creepy crawlies as we go through the house!

The first was pretty straightforward – pumpkins!

pumpkins

They were easy and pretty much mess-free. I simply painted glue onto a paper plate, cut orange tissue into squares and told them to cover all the white. I then gave them three triangles, a mouth, and a green stem and they glued them on. That’s it!

The next craft was a little messier – we painted. My biggest tip when painting is this: go naked.

Now, to be honest, the kiddies weren’t exactly naked, they just took their shirts off to keep them reasonably clean. I have a very cute painting picture but I’ll save that for the parents only!

I told them we were going to paint bats (I already had eyes, fangs, and wings cut out of black paper) and they immediately piped up with the colours they wanted to use – no black mentioned! So we ended up with red, green, and blue:

bats

Cute, hey? After they painted and glued on eyes, I drew a mouth and they glued on fangs and added some bling to the eyes. Then they helped me staple on the wings.

green bat

My house (and I hope all of their houses) looks very festive now but I do have one problem – they’re already asking about Christmas!

ghost craft, Halloween

We had a bit of Halloween fun around here yesterday. Molly was home from school because of a PD Day for the teachers and I needed something fun and easy to do that would satisfy the age range I have around here during the day.

I went with ghosts.

Super simple and I had all the stuff on hand, or rather, I made it up based on what I had on hand!

DSC_9296

Styrofoam cups, black permanent marker, string, white tissue paper, glue stick, and a wooden skewer to poke holes.

First, we drew faces:

DSC_9304

Then I poked a hole in the top of each cup:

DSC_9305

I tied a knot in the string and poked it through the hole from the inside out (with some “help”):

DSC_9307

Glue stick around the inside edge:

DSC_9309

And the kiddies stuck on the strips of tissue:

ghosts

Aren’t they fun?

DSC_9277

The kiddies had a blast making them:

DSC_9300Next up…. pumpkins? Or footprint ghosts? Any suggestions?

2012 Yearlong Album, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Cats, googly eyes, Guns 'n' Roses, gymnastics, Halloween, Kiddies, kiddies, Paul Simon, swimming

listening… to a lot of Paul Simon’s Graceland, one of my top 3 favourite albums along with Cats: The Musical and Guns ‘n’ Roses Appetite for Destruction. (yeah, yeah, odd mix, whatever!)

counting… to 10. A lot. Like over and over and over…. The joys of a strong-minded and stubborn 5-year-old. Sigh.

finishing… mini Halloween pumpkins with the kiddies. L wanted a regular face with googly eyes, Mr. G wanted lots of googly eyes like a monster, and Miss M opted for markers. They’re pretty cute. ๐Ÿ™‚

working… on the next Yearlong Album class and the November LO for it.

itching… to break into this fun project for the Paperie retreat!

thinking… about next year’s Yearlong Album and getting excited for the changes – it’s going to be lots of fun play time!

eager… to get the supplies I need for all the Orlando inspired classes I want to teach. They can’t get here fast enough!

happy… that we finally figured out how to make Mr. G enjoy gymnastics again. One teacher, 5 kids, the gym to themselves – he’s thrilled!

also happy… that Miss M loves swimming so much that she complains her lessons are too short – and she’s moving up to the next level after only 6 lessons!

What’s going on with you right now? And what are your favourite music albums – can they compete with the mish mash of mine? ๐Ÿ™‚
