Ali Edwards, Kiddies, Week in the Life 2012

(Note: No Tuesday Techniques this week. I’ll be concentrating on Week in the Life 2012 instead.)

I started Week in the Life 2012 yesterday. This is my first time doing this project and although I was assuming it would be time-consuming, it wasn’t as bad as I was anticipating. Lots of writing and photo taking, though I didn’t take as many pics as I thought I would. I’m still trying to find the right pictures to take – not used to taking shots of my breakfast!

This week is also turning out to be less ordinary than I thought – an unexpected run to the hospital last night since G was complaining of his ear hurting and I wanted to catch any infection early, but luckily, just a bit of redness, nothing serious!

Here’s some of my pics from yesterday from morning to night:

Loving this so far – we’ll see how I feel by the end of the week!

Ali Edwards, card classes, cards, Hero Arts, Paperie, Studio Calico, Week in the Life 2012

Ok, today is the day – Week in the Life starts.

I have my album ready, the daily sheets printed, a folder set up on my computer, camera batteries charged and memory cards cleared.

Now, I just have to keep up with what’s happening every second then remember to take a picture of it all and write it all down! Yikes!

I’ve tried to do the December Daily before and, although I was really good at the picture thing, I was terrible at writing down the details so the albums (2 of them!) never got finished. I’m counting on you guys to keep me going this time and to hold me accountable to finishing the project!

I’m looking forward to it because we have a big week ahead – eye recheck for M and her kinderstart day for the month, G’s birthday and birthday picture session, L’s birthday party, a night out for D and I, G starting regular gymnastics – he’s too old for the parent and tot session now – plus all the other regular stuff that happens around here. Lots of photo taking opportunities mixed in with pics of my breakfast!

On another note, I’m teaching a Hero Arts card class tomorrow night at The Paperie. We’re doing 3 cards with three different techniques and using the Hero Arts/Studio Calico Calico Borders stamp set, which everyone gets to take home! Call The Paperie if you’re interested in going, there’s always room for one more and we’ll be playing with alcohol inks:

masking:

one layer card

and watercolour paper:

stains and watercolour paper

It should be fun!

I’m not guaranteeing a Tuesday Techniques post tomorrow since I have to kit for this class and organize today’s pictures but I’m hoping to get it done. You’ll have to stop back and see how productive I will be tonight – think I can fit it all in?

Basic Grey, Boston Pizza, Janeway Children's Hospital

  • So, I’ve changed my mind about the album I’m using for Week in the Life – I’ve switched to a Simple Stories 6×8 album. There are going to be some challenges with this as I’m still using the daily sheet to record everything and that’s 8.5×11, and I want to include it in the finished album, but I think it’s a good system overall. The Mix and Match Documented album comes with different page protectors, chipboard dividers, and patterned, though neutral, journalling pages. Lots to work with without having to take a lot of time to root through my stash and build my own kit!
  • My god-daughter, Julianne, and her sister, Rachel, are two of the most amazing kids ever. At ages 6 and 8 they have already raised over $22,000 for the Janeway Children’s Hospital. This month, on a very stormy Saturday, they were the celebrity servers at Boston Pizza and that company donated 10% of the receipts taken in during the time the  girls were there. Because it was such an awful day, BP offered to donate 10% of all receipts turned in to Rachel and Julianne’s Special Project during the month of April. So… if you have or will have Boston Pizza receipts from either St. John’s location this month, let me know and I’ll get them from you to pass along!
  • On another note, Julianne won the kids award for volunteering in Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s for all her hard work, the same award Rachel won 2 years ago! Love you, Julianne, we’re so proud of you
  • I did a layout tag in February and never posted the completed LO here, though I did show a sneak peek. Finally, here’s the whole thing:

Madness

It’s a picture of my brothers and I at Matthew’s wedding 2 summers ago. They’re seriously crazy people, it’s almost impossible to get a reasonable picture of the three of us – they’re just nutty!

  • Heading out to The Paperie tonight for a crop night. I’m looking forward to it but have no idea what to bring! I have a LO in mind but it requires my (mom’s!) sewing machine and I’m not dragging that with me so we’ll have to see. Maybe it will be unproductive and I’ll just chat and eat!

Hope you all have a great weekend, whatever your plans!

Felt

1. My friend Blair, who now lives in Montreal, has an awesome blog where he writes a fictional series and, my favourite, reviews on local restaurants! I need to make a trip, crash at his place, and just eat myself silly! Go check him out – I love how he writes!

2. I’m all signed up for this – and I can’t wait to Get Messy! It’s going to be a blast!

3. I’m going to take the plunge and attempt Week in the Life starting on Monday. Ali Edwards ensures me I can do it, and so does Cathie, so here goes nothing! I’m pretty sure I’m going with an 8×8 size and using Bazzill Lickety Slippers Crazy Pack page protectors. I’m planning on simple, simple, simple. And am planning to use these to keep me on track.

4. Just got these in the mail from Simon Says Stamp – can’t wait to rip into them! Alas, some is for Cathie and RLOK so I can’t keep it all. 😦

5. The Paperie got in some new 100% wool felt from a company called FeltWorks. It’s awesome, I love it! It’s all unrefined and slubby, and thicker in some spots than others – very cool! Can’t wait to play some more, I have big ideas and plans!

Tuesday Techniques – Making Paper into Fabric (sort of!)

Claudine Hellmuth Studio, Multi Medium, October Afternoon, Ranger, Sticky Back Canvas

Love, love, love this technique and it’s the one the always gets the “Wow!” when I teach it in a class – people love this, it’s like magic! For all those times you wished your favourite piece of paper was more durable or pliable, now it can be! This is how I made the canvas spine for the mini album I showed yesterday (weren’t the houses the sweetest?).

You need:

Supplies

Sticky-Back Canvas, patterned paper, water, and Glossy (not matte) Multi Medium.

First, peel the backing off your canvas and stick your paper pattern side down to the sticky side of the canvas. Burnish it so it’s stuck on there really well (I use the end of my Basic Grey Rub-on Roller). I repeat (because someone will always mis-hear or not believe me!) adhere the pattern to the sticky side so you can’t see it! Bear with me, I promise this will work – I’m a professional! Hahahaha! 🙂

As a side note, single or doubled sided patterned paper will work and you can use either the white or natural Sticky Back Canvas.

Adhere and Burnish

Now, mist your paper really well. Get it soaked, it will be fine!

Mist

Once the water soaks in a little, use your finger to rub off the paper. Now, don’t scrub at it like you’re cleaning a baking dish or anything, just rub so the paper peels off!

Reveal the Magic!

You may have to rewet the paper and canvas because you want it to stay wet. Just keep working at it – you’ll notice the majority of the paper peeling off but the pattern stays put – fun, hey?

Now, you may notice that you can’t get all the little paper nubbies off with just the water. This is where the glossy multi medium comes in. When you get to the point where all you have are a few paper bits, squirt a little medium on the canvas or your finger and rub it around.

Finish and Seal

The multi medium will help take off the rest of the fibers and seal the fabric at the same time!

Once it dries you can die cut or emboss the canvas, or just use it as a piece on your project. I love using this to make scarves for snowmen, or die cutting flowers for cards and display pieces. Because it acts like fabric, you suddenly have a lot more uses for your paper!

Everything on this tag, including the ribbon, has been made using this technique and October Afternoon papers – love the bright colours and patterns they have! Since this is a transfer, colours become a little more muted so it is better to start with vibrant colours, knowing they will tone down a little in the finished product.

As always, post me link to your blog or gallery so I can see anything you make – I love to see how you are inspired to create!

S.

P.S. I found a video of Claudine Hellmuth demonstrating this technique at CHA – enjoy!

Sorry there was no post on Friday – the 13th hit here with a vengeance!

As promised, here are my 12 on Twelve pictures from Thursday!

From left to right, top to bottom:

1. L and G were superheros today – with mini monster trucks to match!

2. M rocking her new fancy dress again.

3. Photographing the new Paperie April kit – Chevron Chic!

4. Superman G making faces for the camera.

5. M walking home in the rain from C’s house.

6. Taking pics of my Clever Handmade project for The Paperie blog.

7. G doing stickers during nap time.

8. M taking a nap in Mama’s bed during nap time!

9. Ella taking a nap on the stairs and L’s blankie.

10. A very fancy new gift from D – I always complain ours don’t cut. I won’t have that complaint anymore!

11. M modelling her jammies from Uncle Matthew and Aunt Cecilia – she loves them!

12. A late night treat!

This was fun again – thanks Dear Lizzie, can’t wait for next month, it’s a great overview of one day each month!

Android, Clever Handmade, Instagram, Photoshop, Rainbow Tag LO, Ranger

1. I’m doing 12 on Twelve again today. Loved it last month and forgot all about it until I saw this post this morning to remind me! Who’s joining in? It’s not too late, there’s lots of day left!

2. Android finally got the Instagram app and I couldn’t be happier! And I’m also enjoying Ink361 to view my pics and pull them into Photoshop. I’ve heard Extragram is good too though, so I’ll check that out and see what I think. And if you want to follow my photostream my instagram name is saracees!

3. October Afternoon has this sketch challenge up today and though I’m not much of a sketch person, I love this one! Think I’ll have to try to make time to do a LO!

4. I have a another Paperie Picks blog post going live tomorrow and I’ll talk about this cute project:

Sneak peek!

I tweeted a sneak of it the other day but I’ll go into detail about the product in the blog post – awesome stuff!

5. I’m seriously considering another online class. I know, I’m addicted! But the current one – Sketchbook 4 – is awesome and is going to be a fantastic source of ideas once it’s done. The new one, Get Messy, is right up my alley these days – paint, ink, and mist, and a finished mini album in the end! Love the sound of it!

6. I have a fun class coming up on Sunday at The Paperie – the Rainbow Tag Layout. We’ll be having fun with Ranger and October Afternoon products, plus using LilyBee and Amy Tangerine alphas. There are a few spots left so call and sign up – it’s a cheery one, great for those new spring pics you’re taking!

The LO we’ll do in class is not exactly the same as this one – we’re using slightly different alphas and this original LO met a nasty end with a cup of hot chocolate – not a good scene! 🙂

Have a great day – hopefully it’s not as rainy in your neck of the woods as it is here!
