ICAD 2013 | June 4: meow

My brother was here from BC for a month and his girlfriend joined him this past week. But today they left to go home again. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

And for those of you who don’t know Canadian geography that well, Mount Pearl and Vancouver are about as far apart as you can possibly get. They’re waaaaaay over there on the west coast. Boo.

So, in honour of “Uncle Grayma,” I made this ICAD:

Confused? Well, if I ever find it I’ll post a link to a YouTube video of Graham, serenading a friend of his with a composition of his own. I’m assuming it’s his own, I don’t think anyone else in the world would claim it.

He simply plays his guitar and sings, “Meow, meow, meow,” over and over. Hilariously funny to me, maybe not so funny to you all but I’m going to make you suffer through anyway. As soon as I find the link….

I used some new Twinks on this one because 1. they’re new, 2. they’re shimmery, and 3. green in Graham’s favourite colour. It actually runs in the family – Matthew (my other brother), Gabe, and I all claim green as ours as well. It must be genetic!

And since I can’t seem to do anything without some dimension, I added light molding paste through one of my fave stencils (thanks again, Julie! You make the best designs!)

…happened to me about a week and a half ago.

I tweeted sneak peek pics of the Yearlong album cover for the class participants to get an idea of what we would be doing in class.

Ronda Palazzari, who designed the awesome Confetti stencil I used, saw the pics and sent me a direct message through Twitter, saying she loved it and could she please include it in a blog post about her stencils?

Umm, let me think about that, YES!

So today the post is up on her blog and to be included with artists such as May Flaum and Marjie Kemper is a total thrill!

And thanks Ronda, I’m so glad you like the album!

By the way, Ronda also teased me, saying that her new stencils (coming in July) were even better than this past release! I offered to give them a test run, make sure they worked ok and all, but I don’t think she’s going for it – sigh. ๐Ÿ™‚

KP Weekend!

This past weekend, The Paperie hosted Kelly Purkey and we all had an awesome time!

Krista and I were lucky enough to share the teaching floor with her and do classes so there were lots of different styles and projects for participants to make. Kelly taught a LO class, plus a mini album from scratch. Krista did a completed Dear Lizzy Daybook mini and I did a tag technique workshop. Since I ย don’t have any pictures on LO’s or in albums yet, I’ll show you the tags I taught and be back another time with the other goodies!

First of all we played with Dylusions Ink Spray and gesso, plus the Tim Holtz Easter Blueprints stamps (CMS144):

I love the texture the gesso provides!

Then we used Distress Ink and Perfect Pearls powder to make a great background that we layered with the Vintage Things Blueprints set (CMS152):

We did a soft background using Distress Stains, the Sewing Room Sizzix Bigz die, and some tissue wrap:

Finally, we all played with the brand new Distress Paints! We marbleized, stenciled, and painted:

And added some amazing mirrored sheet letters to finish it off! Unfortunately, I only have this one cell phone picture of this tag but I’ll update with better pics tomorrow when I get my tag back.

It was a bit hairy at the end of class, trying to get them all done but all in all, I think we pulled it off and everyone liked their tags – whew! Plus, they all got to take home a new Distress Paint and a 6×6 Crafter’s Workshop stencil of their choice, pretty sweet!

The weekend as a whole, starting Friday night with a wine & cheese, leading into classes all day Saturday and then a crop, ending with another full class day on Sunday, was fabulous! I think everyone was pretty tired by the time it finished but it was worth every moment. Plus, we got to get a jumping picture with Kelly at Signal Hill in front of Cabot Tower – the icing on top of a very good weekend, even if we did freeze our faces off to get it!

Clean and Simple Stencils

I love mist. I love the randomness of it and how it’s intense where you spray and then fades out – love it!

I also love molding paste – the dimension, the cool effect, the sharpness of the image yet it’s jagged on the top. Awesome!

But I know people who hate getting their hands dirty.

Yes, it’s true, there are crafters out there with clean hands, my friends! They’ll never understand the Julie Fei-Fan Balzer Dirty Girl apron…. Heck, they’ll never need one! ๐Ÿ™‚

And so, for those people, and for those of you like me who can swing either way, I have a new class this Wednesday night!

Clean and Simple Stencils.

You can do it, you can stay clean, and I have two LO’s to prove it! Better yet, I incorporate at least 4 different techniques too!

Tuesday Techniques – Stencils Part 4: Modeling Pastes

We’re at the end of the stencil techniques and today is my favourite way to use stencils – with modeling pastes!

I love texture and dimension on my work, especially little pieces like tags. On a small surface, it’s hard to add lots of embellishments so extra texture adds interest without overwhelming the piece. Today, I’m going to show you some of the pastes and gels I use and the difference between letting them air dry or heat drying them.

First, here are the supplies I’ll be using:

Either a stiff card (like an old bank card or hotel key), a palette knife, Light Molding Paste, Flexible Modeling Paste, Coarse Texture Gel, Coarse Pumice Gel, and Clear Gesso.

First take whichever medium you want to use and spread it over the stencil. I like to go heavier in some areas and lighter in others for extra texture but it looks great all flat too.

I chose to work with the pastes from lightest to heaviest so light molding paste is up first:

I heat set the left side and let the right dry on its own. You can see that the left is puffy and a more even looking layer:

The second paste I tried was flexible modeling paste:

I again heat set the left and allowed the right to air dry, and again, the left is puffier and smoother:

Next up was Coarse Texture Gel:

It was really hard to get a good picture of this one, but the left side, which was heat set, went translucent and although it puffed up during heating, flatten when it cooled. The air dried right side is more opaque in colour and less shiny:

Finally for the pastes, I used Coarse Pumice Gel which is so thick it’s almost not spreadable:

It’s very cool though, and the difference between heat setting and air drying was minimal. The heat set left side was slightly lighter in appearance:

Finally, I used clear gesso, which is much runnier than black or white gesso, just to see what it did:

Once heat set, it puffed up but then, instead of falling flat, it fell down all wrinkly (kind of cool), while the air dried side was clear and rough:

Finally, I misted them all:

I found that the mist did soak into the air dried pastes more, whereas I noticed I could get more ink off the heat set side, almost like it was a resist. I didn’t do this with the Coarse Pumice Gel for two reasons: 1. It wasn’t dry, that stuff takes hours! and 2. I’ve tried it before and it always looks awful. I have been told that mixing colour in first works well though.

Speaking of mixing in colour, I’ve been trying to find a pigment to mix with pastes so they’re coloured without getting runny. Remember, the drier the better for stencils and clean designs! The best colour I had found so far was Golden Heavy Body Fluid Acrylics, and it was just ok for me, maybe I need more colours to experiment with. Today I tried my Perfect Pearls Powders – in a word, awesome!

All you have to do with any pigment is take some paste out and plop it on your craft sheet, then add (or sprinkle!) the pigment and use your palette knife or card to mix it up. Then smear it over the stencil like usual. My only complaint about the Perfect Pearls? Once mixed in they’re not shimmery! But the colours are great and because they’re a powder there’s nothing to liquify the paste.

For my finished tag, I used Flexible Modeling Paste which I air dried almost completely, then heated to get fine little bubbles on the surface – more texture! ๐Ÿ™‚

And see that quote? I had the card done, then found that on a sticker sheet – perfect!
