My brother was here from BC for a month and his girlfriend joined him this past week. But today they left to go home again. 😦

And for those of you who don’t know Canadian geography that well, Mount Pearl and Vancouver are about as far apart as you can possibly get. They’re waaaaaay over there on the west coast. Boo.

So, in honour of “Uncle Grayma,” I made this ICAD:

meow

Confused? Well, if I ever find it I’ll post a link to a YouTube video of Graham, serenading a friend of his with a composition of his own. I’m assuming it’s his own, I don’t think anyone else in the world would claim it.

He simply plays his guitar and sings, “Meow, meow, meow,” over and over. Hilariously funny to me, maybe not so funny to you all but I’m going to make you suffer through anyway. As soon as I find the link….

I used some new Twinks on this one because 1. they’re new, 2. they’re shimmery, and 3. green in Graham’s favourite colour. It actually runs in the family – Matthew (my other brother), Gabe, and I all claim green as ours as well. It must be genetic!

meow - cat

And since I can’t seem to do anything without some dimension, I added light molding paste through one of my fave stencils (thanks again, Julie! You make the best designs!)

meow - paste and shine

Back tomorrow with another one!

S.

Are you doing this challenge? Are you posting your ICAD’s anywhere? Leave me a link in the comments so I can check them out!

ICAD 2013 | June 3: unsupervised

Gabe saw Molly have so much fun painting with my mists the other day that he wanted a turn too – so today you get to see what he made during our crafty time yesterday!

He learned from her mistakes and didn’t try to make an actual picture – he just painted colours. He had a blast doing it, especially the date stamping part – he picked the date himself.

gabe - painted mist

For mine, I took the paper towel we had been using the past few days for cleaning up and pasted it to the card.

i am currently unsupervised

After it dried, I smeared Glass Gel Beads through a stencil, heated them, and then coloured a few with mist (since it was out anyway!). I left the paper towel raggedy, I love the organic look of the edges that way:

i am currently unsupervised - glass bead gel

The texture left by the paper towel is pretty cool so I tried not to cover it all up:

i am currently unsupervised - paper towel texture

I finished by spraying a blank card with the same mist I painted the gel beads, stamped my sentiment, courtesy of Dyan Reaveley naturally, and cut it out to add to the card.

I am currently unsupervised, indeed!

ICAD 2013 | June 2: wish…

Molly sat down and made a card with me so I have two to show you today!

I was playing with my mists so of course, she needed to play as well. She dipped paintbrush in the open bottles and started to make a pirate ship but the mist did not cooperate with that plan! She did end up with some great shapes, patterns, and colours and was happy with it – I call that all good!

molly - pirate ship

For mine, I knew I wanted to make “wish flowers” – those fluffly, seed laden, end-of-their-life dandelions that are everywhere around us right now. Molly, Gabe, and I went for a walk yesterday and found a bunch which we promptly wished upon and blew everywhere.

I painted the card with gesso (having fun playing with that right now) and then sprayed and smeared mist all over it.

wish

I punched holes for the dandelions with my old eyelet setter then masked the rest of the card and sprayed Mister Huey’s Blizzard over the holes:

wish - shimmer

It’s hard to see, but the way I scraped the layer of gesso over the card left some flat texture that was picked up when the mist went over it – in real life it adds a lot to the look of the card:

wish - texture

I”ll be back later with a card I made for an event this weekend!

ICAD 2013 | June 1: angel’s wings

Gesso, ICAD, Maya Road

It’s here, it’s here! Index Card A Day is back and I’m super excited to see what I can put on an index card this year!

I only started today, a day late, since Darrell’s grandmother died last week and the funeral was yesterday. Things have been a little crazy and busy around here.

This card was definitely inspired by the events of the past few days:

angel's wings

I started with gesso, embedded a Maya Road chipboard wing, and misted. I got a marbling effect in one of the open areas in the wing which I need to explore a bit more – that will probably make an appearance in a class sometime soon! 🙂

angel's wings - marbling

I stamped the sentiment with some new alpha stamps and my favourite Jet Black Archival ink. Love that stuff – I sprayed over it with shimmer mist right after I stamped and it still didn’t budge!

And the dimension from the embedded wing is awesome sauce!

angel's wings - dimensionI’ll be back tomorrow with today’s card. Also, click any of the photos and you’ll see the larger pics in Flickr, along with the supply list!

1. I’m sure most of you have heard of/seen this video about Zach Sobiech. Even if you’ve already watched it, it’s worth another view.

2. Donna Downey is up to 30,000 Facebook fans and so, as a thank you, she has done a free mixed media video. Of course it’s awesome, so go take advantage and enjoy!

4. Another year, another ICAD (Index Card a Day)! Last year I managed to get 52 of the 61 done – this year I’m determined to do them all plus the ones I missed last year! I love this challenge, it’s a great way to play with new product, learn new techniques and just have fun. Plus, the Flickr group is incredible!

Index Card A Day – #52

#52 – Enjoy the little things…

I’m finally back to finishing the last 10 ICAD’s from this summer! For this one I smeared light molding paste over a fun stencil, Bug Doily, and let it air dry. I then painted over it with my cheapie water colours paints, blending them together. Although I really liked the blending colours, I wanted a bright spot and that wasn’t happening so I misted the centre with Lemon Zest Dylusions Ink Spray and then blended around it again.

Over that I stippled watercolour paint through another stencil, Art Is, and painted the wood veneer stars. The sentiment is, of course, stamped over a premade background and cut out!

I love the texture of the molding paste, especially with the text over it.

And the addition of a quick spritz of Studio Calico Shine? Awesome!

I’ll have another post later today with the LO’s from my upcoming stencil class – stay tuned!

Classes, ICAD, ICAD2, kindergarten, Printstagram, Project Life, The Crafter's Workshop, The Paperie

Yes, yes, I know it’s Friday (late on Friday!) but yesterday was a big day and it got away from me!

1. Miss M started school yesterday! There’s no pre-k here so it was truly her first day ever and she was uber excited!

Me, not so much… However, it hasn’t been as bad as I thought it would and she loves it!

2. I’m starting Project Life. Yup, today is the last day of week one for me and I’m still not sure how to go about organizing it all. Please help me! Anyone who is doing this or has done it, give me your best tips – the things you’ve learned that work well and the things you’d do differently next time. In order for me to do this, I’m going to need all the help I can get!

Already I’m overwhelmed with the amount of content for this week alone: long weekend at the cabin, school starting, swimming starting for G… Go ahead, ask how many pictures I’ve taken!

3. I’m doing a new class at The Paperie next week and it’s all about stencils! Better still, it’s all about clean and simple stencils! So, those of you who hate to get your hands dirty (I know who you are!) this will show you how to use this great tool without getting mist under your nails! 🙂

4. I’ve started in on the last 10 ICAD’s I have left to make. I promise a blog post on Monday for the next one on the list!

5. I’m considering getting some stuff done from Printstagram – has anyone used it? Thoughts? Shipping and quality good? What size do you like?

The tiny books look neat and I thought they might make fun gifts for the kiddies at Christmas!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Index Card A Day – #50 & #51

#50 – Make a beautiful mess

I recently got some black gesso and decided to use it on an index card. It didn’t turn out as planned! So I took some old paper towel and adhered it with gel medium. Because of the black base, it turned out pretty dark which is why I added Golden Light Molding Paste over the Peony stencil to cover the majority of the card – it lightened it up quite a bit, thank goodness!

I heat set the molding paste, since I like the look when it puffs up, then added the sentiment from some Cosmo Cricket word stickers.

After a bad start, I really like how it turned out! And the detail from the stencil is awesome!

Here’s a bonus for you today – M did one last index card!

Of course, she had to use the “sparkly pots” aka my Twinkling H2O’s and she covered the whole card in gold. She then painted little wood veneer people and when the card was dry, stuck them on. She’s pretty minimalist, so she said that was it!

I love the colours she used!

#51 – Be true…

This is one of my recent faves – I love the bright colours!

I first added molding paste over another new stencil, Zinnia, and then misted with my Dylusions Ink Sprays. I added a couple of stamps but it was still just not quite right.  Then I saw the mask left over from card #48 and since it was covered in a different colour mist, I added it to the mix.

Love how it turned out! I little bit of colouring and some more Cosmo Cricket word stickers and it was done!

That’s all I have ready to show you, but there will be a few more in the next little while – I just need to get the time to complete them! 🙂

Index Card A Day – #48 & #49

Dylusions, Dylusions Ink Sprays, ICAD, ICAD2, Ranger

I did these two cards at a crafty night out with some friends. I had new stamps (Dylusions, of course!) and wanted to play!

#48 – upside down

I am not a fan of this card. You know how you have an idea in your head and it just doesn’t work out? Yeah. That’s this card.

First I stamped the body image and masked it. Then I misted with water, then Dylusions, then water again to blend. I went a little overboard with the liquid and had a far amount of seepage under the mask, though that didn’t bother me – I kind  of liked it anyway!

I then stamped the head image, but didn’t like it so I stamped it again and cut it out, colouring before adhering to the card. I stamped and cut out the sentiment and then added it.

If I had my time back I would have left the head out all together and put the body upside down…

Oh, well, it’s only one card out of 61, right? 🙂

#49 – adventures

Now this card was the opposite of the first – it turned out better than expected!

Again I misted and sprayed the background over a stamped body image but then I misted Studio Calico Shine over a stencil to give a little pop to the background.

I stamped and coloured the boots and wings over a gessoed card, which helped me blend and lighten the marker colours. I cut and added them to the card and then thought the sentiment was perfect for the winged boots.

Lots of shine and there’s some good dimension with the wings too (though I didn’t get a good picture of that) – they’re only adhered by the boots so they fly off the card.

I’m still hoping to get vacation pictures up today or tomorrow so keep an eye out for those! And, this is hard to believe, there are only a dozen more index cards left to do – today is actually the official final day but vacation put me behind a bit. Are you sick of them yet? 🙂

Index Card A Day – #46 & #47

Creative Imginations/Luminarte, Dylusions, ICAD, ICAD2, Mandala, Ranger, The Crafter's Workshop, Twinkling H2O's

(note: I totally forgot to set this to post yesterday morning – sorry!)

#46 – mandala

If you follow me on Twitter, you already know that this card did not want to be made – it blew into the pool and got soaked twice! Thank goodness for permanent ink!

The ink in the background (Hero Arts Shadow and Mid-tone Inks) did bleed a little but the stamped pattern is still perfectly intact.

I drew the mandala with my black Zig pen from Kuretake and added a few tiny highlights with my white Uniball.

There’s nothing else because, frankly, after drying it out a second time I was simply ready to be done with it! 🙂

#47 – I was cleansed forgiven….

This one was just fun to do. I used my Twinkling H2O’s and randomly painted, adding extra colour here and there, then added in some stencils and punchinella.

I finished by stamping the sentiment on a pre-made background of a contrasting colour, then cut it out and added it.

As always, I love the shine – it makes me happy!

Hoping to be back tomorrow with another couple of cards or maybe vacation photos – I haven’t forgotten about that!
