I mentioned quite a while ago that I planned to start art journaling. And I did plan to start, really.

But it never happened.

Until recently! I finally opened up my Dylusions journal and put some stuff on the page. I have three or four started now but here’s my first one:

no journey

I love the bright colours – the Dylusions Ink Sprays are amazing!

This is actually the second take on this page, the first one was a mess of some stars that didn’t work out the way I had envisioned so I covered it up and went for it again. I still kept the stars:

no journey - stars

But I added my beloved Tim Holtz car and Dylusions leaves:

no journey - car

And a great quote:

no journey - quote

Plus some Dylusions stencils, metallic paint, and a bit of white gel pen.

I really like how it ended up, and am loving the more recent pages I’ve done even more. Playing with product just never gets old, does it?

I’ll be back next week with another page – trying to keep this regular and being held accountable here will help!

I had an awesome weekend at The Paperie Fall Retreat with all my buddies, playing, crafting, laughing, drinking, demoing…

The item I demoed is a new one for the Paperie and after my trip to Orlando in October, it was one that I knew had to be in the store! I was super excited when it showed up in time for the Retreat…

This is going to be more of a quick and simple overview introducing you to
Silks than an actual tutorial but I hope you like it anyway!

You’re going to need:

Supplies

Silks, Sticky Back Canvas, Craft sheet, paint brushes, Archival Ink, and stamps.

To begin, Silks are a Luminarte product, as in the people who make my beloved Twinks, so you know they’re going to be awesome and shimmery! They’re a water based acrylic glaze which means they’re not permanent or opaque but really fluid and translucent – and shimmery!

For the first tag (sorry there are no pictures of the process, my camera battery died and my little point and shoot just wasn’t up to the challenge, sad) I simply painted the Silks over the Sticky Back canvas, blending as I went, and let them dry, making a background. The beauty of these paints is that they don’t mix together and make mud colour – they just blend and stay gorgeous!

Once it was dry, I stamped the images in Archival Ink and then painted them in with more colours of Silks. As you will see, no muddy colours, just awesomeness! And great shine!

The second tag I made so I could show you how the Silks act as a resist. I stamped the same images in Jet Black Archival on the Sticky Back Canvas and heat set them…

…then painted them in with the same colours of Silks as the first tag:

This looks all wet and messy because I have found that on canvas the paint covers better and easier if I wet the fabric first. You do want to be careful because if you use too much water (I have 4-5 layers of paint and water on the house) you will get this wicking of the paint happening. Not an issue for this tag, I have plans to disguise it and the style of the stamp lends itself to an imperfect effect anyway.

Once the paint was dry, I misted over it with Dylusions Spray Inks and then misted lightly with water to blend them a bit.

You can already see that the Silks are resisting the sprays and keeping their intense colours – love it!

I’m impatient, so I used my cloth to blot up the excess moisture and then heat set the tag:

You can also see that the shimmer comes through and resists the mist too – so cool!

And a good black mixed media pen disguises the wicking flaws!

I didn’t do anything with the tags except add crinkle ribbon because I really just like them as they are. The ribbon for the first tag was painted with the Silks and it has awesome shimmer plus is just a little stiff – enough to hold some shape.

See the top of the tag? Easy and cool technique that I’ll try to remember to do next week!

Here’s the first tag – painting Silks over Silks on canvas:

I love the softness and overall shimmer of this one.

And the second tag – Silks resist with mist:

I think this is my favourite – I love the contrast of the shimmer paint and the matte mist and the colours are amazing!

Click on any of the pictures to make them bigger and see the shimmer a little better – I only wish I had the skills to really photograph it!

Let me know if you have played with Silks and show me what you’ve done – I’d love to see it! And if you don’t have any, go get some, really, they’re worth it!

Index Card A Day – #52

#52 – Enjoy the little things…

I’m finally back to finishing the last 10 ICAD’s from this summer! For this one I smeared light molding paste over a fun stencil, Bug Doily, and let it air dry. I then painted over it with my cheapie water colours paints, blending them together. Although I really liked the blending colours, I wanted a bright spot and that wasn’t happening so I misted the centre with Lemon Zest Dylusions Ink Spray and then blended around it again.

Over that I stippled watercolour paint through another stencil, Art Is, and painted the wood veneer stars. The sentiment is, of course, stamped over a premade background and cut out!

I love the texture of the molding paste, especially with the text over it.

And the addition of a quick spritz of Studio Calico Shine? Awesome!

I’ll have another post later today with the LO’s from my upcoming stencil class – stay tuned!

Index Card A Day – #48 & #49

Dylusions, Dylusions Ink Sprays, ICAD, ICAD2, Ranger

I did these two cards at a crafty night out with some friends. I had new stamps (Dylusions, of course!) and wanted to play!

#48 – upside down

I am not a fan of this card. You know how you have an idea in your head and it just doesn’t work out? Yeah. That’s this card.

First I stamped the body image and masked it. Then I misted with water, then Dylusions, then water again to blend. I went a little overboard with the liquid and had a far amount of seepage under the mask, though that didn’t bother me – I kind  of liked it anyway!

I then stamped the head image, but didn’t like it so I stamped it again and cut it out, colouring before adhering to the card. I stamped and cut out the sentiment and then added it.

If I had my time back I would have left the head out all together and put the body upside down…

Oh, well, it’s only one card out of 61, right? 🙂

#49 – adventures

Now this card was the opposite of the first – it turned out better than expected!

Again I misted and sprayed the background over a stamped body image but then I misted Studio Calico Shine over a stencil to give a little pop to the background.

I stamped and coloured the boots and wings over a gessoed card, which helped me blend and lighten the marker colours. I cut and added them to the card and then thought the sentiment was perfect for the winged boots.

Lots of shine and there’s some good dimension with the wings too (though I didn’t get a good picture of that) – they’re only adhered by the boots so they fly off the card.

I’m still hoping to get vacation pictures up today or tomorrow so keep an eye out for those! And, this is hard to believe, there are only a dozen more index cards left to do – today is actually the official final day but vacation put me behind a bit. Are you sick of them yet? 🙂

Creative Imginations/Luminarte, Dylusions Ink Sprays, ICAD, ICAD2, Ranger, Studio Calico, The Crafter's Workshop, Twinkling H2O's, Wood Veneer Stars

I made this background a while back while showing my mom the Dylusions Ink Sprays and a stencil. I misted turquoise, blue, lime green, and orange and let them blend then dry.

Once dry, I sprayed hot pink through the stencil which made purple on the blue part of the card. I also used water for a ghosting technique and then covered the whole thing with Perfect Pearls Mist.

I stamped the house and sentiment on another misted background I had done and cut out all the pieces. With the house, I cut each layer of the roof apart and cut open the door on one side. When I pieced it all back together again, I only glued the tops of each roof piece and then bent them out for dimension. I also let the door swing open.

The stars were simply painted with gold Twinkling H2O’s and adhered.

I love these painty, blendy looking backgrounds and Dylusions mix to make the most amazing colours! I love the “shingles” on the roof too – fun, fun!

See you tomorrow for a few more!

Cosmo Cricket, Creative Imginations/Luminarte, Dylusions Ink Sprays, ICAD, ICAD2, Ranger, Twinkling H2O's

A while back I saw a tutorial using Ranger Foil Tape and alcohol inks. I loved the concept and kept meaning to try it but….. You know how it goes!

However, my friend Cathie gave it a spin and then did a couple of other things with tin foil and I knew I had to just go do it!

I used Matte multi medium to adhere tin foil to a cad (basically, I was too lazy to go downstairs and look for my Foil Tape!) and let it dry. I then used my Twinkling H2O’s to paint the surface. Although you can’t see the shimmer, the colours are fabulous!

I used a couple of stencils and Dylusions Ink sprays to add some additional interest and finished it by adding a Cosmo Cricket sticker.

It was super hard to get a pic of the texture, shine, and colour – crossing my fingers that you can see it well enough!

Easy and fun and I have a couple of other ideas for foil tape. Hopefully it won’t take so long to get around to doing them this time!

Dylusions Ink Sprays, Flickr, ICAD, Online Card Classes, Paperie, Ranger, Tim Holtz

… oh well, that’s just how it goes sometimes, right? 🙂

1. I just signed up for this. Love the idea of a cute finished sampler and for $10 it’s a steal! I believe this discounted price (regular cost is $20) expires today so jump on it if you want to join in!

2. Looking forward to this online class as well – Online Card Classes have the best instructors, videos, and samples so I know it’s going to be a good one!

3. I am still really, really loving Index Card A Day (ICAD). 21 days in and I’ve done a card everyday – no catchup needed….yet! I love just getting to play and try new things and I love the size of the canvas. If you haven’t played along you can start anytime, no pressure. And the Flickr group is full of inspiration and amazing cards. I have to say thanks to Tammy for all the work she does organizing this and keeping everyone motivated – she rocks!

P.S. You can see all my ICAD posts here and all my cards (and M’s cards) here.

4. Saw this quote on the Big Picture Classes homepage today and thought it was perfect for those friends of mine doing Project Life. Most of them are at the point of playing catchup and figuring out how to stay caught up during the summer. Here you go ladies! 😉

“The sooner you fall behind, the more time you’ll have to catch up.”   – Anonymous

5. Tim Holtz and Ranger just released the Summer Seasonal Distress Inks and I’m a happy camper! They are super bright and when you blend the Salty Ocean and Picked Raspberry together, they make the best purple ever! Check out my ICAD from yesterday to see…

6. I have another 2012 Yearlong Album Class this weekend and we’ll being doing the next two months. Here’s a sneak of July!

For the 20 ladies joining me, no extra supplies are needed but bring a snack! 🙂

7. I have a blog post going live on The Paperie website today; my pick are Dylusions Ink Sprays! Here’s a snippet of the finished LO you’ll see over there!

8. Having dinner and a fire with my dad tonight and there will be extra little kiddies for mine to play with – fun!

Have a great weekend!
