Ali Edwards, Kiddies, kiddies, Week in the Life 2012

(This is my second post today, check below for my Moxie Fab World Tuesday Trigger submission!)

Back for day two of Week in the Life and I’m still loving it. So much so that I’m seriously considering Project Life next Year, though I might start that in September as that’s when M starts school – seems like a good point from which to go year to year.

Anyway…. Here are some pics from yesterday!

Enjoy!

This and That

Basic Grey, Boston Pizza, Janeway Children's Hospital

  • So, I’ve changed my mind about the album I’m using for Week in the Life – I’ve switched to a Simple Stories 6×8 album. There are going to be some challenges with this as I’m still using the daily sheet to record everything and that’s 8.5×11, and I want to include it in the finished album, but I think it’s a good system overall. The Mix and Match Documented album comes with different page protectors, chipboard dividers, and patterned, though neutral, journalling pages. Lots to work with without having to take a lot of time to root through my stash and build my own kit!
  • My god-daughter, Julianne, and her sister, Rachel, are two of the most amazing kids ever. At ages 6 and 8 they have already raised over $22,000 for the Janeway Children’s Hospital. This month, on a very stormy Saturday, they were the celebrity servers at Boston Pizza and that company donated 10% of the receipts taken in during the time the  girls were there. Because it was such an awful day, BP offered to donate 10% of all receipts turned in to Rachel and Julianne’s Special Project during the month of April. So… if you have or will have Boston Pizza receipts from either St. John’s location this month, let me know and I’ll get them from you to pass along!
  • On another note, Julianne won the kids award for volunteering in Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s for all her hard work, the same award Rachel won 2 years ago! Love you, Julianne, we’re so proud of you
  • I did a layout tag in February and never posted the completed LO here, though I did show a sneak peek. Finally, here’s the whole thing:

Madness

It’s a picture of my brothers and I at Matthew’s wedding 2 summers ago. They’re seriously crazy people, it’s almost impossible to get a reasonable picture of the three of us – they’re just nutty!

  • Heading out to The Paperie tonight for a crop night. I’m looking forward to it but have no idea what to bring! I have a LO in mind but it requires my (mom’s!) sewing machine and I’m not dragging that with me so we’ll have to see. Maybe it will be unproductive and I’ll just chat and eat!

Hope you all have a great weekend, whatever your plans!

Jennifer McGuire, Online Card Classes, Tim Holtz

So I’ve raved about the online course I’m doing with Tim Holtz through Online Card Classes, and I’ve shown you a couple of tags that I’ve made. Today, I’m posting all the ones I’ve completed!

They’re all pretty standard, just the basic techniques, but now that I have this bunch, with recipes on the back, I can expand and make all sorts of fun stuff! I’ve already done a card for an upcoming class at The Paperie and made a birthday card, now I want to do some stuff on layouts. There are a couple of tags I haven’t been able to do yet, like the custom stamp pad, as I’m waiting for supplies to come in and can’t substitute for a few specific items. However, here’s what I have so far:

Day 2: Distress Ink

Blended Spritz & Flick/Brushless Watercolour/Wrinkle Free Distress

Day 3: Archival Ink

Alcohol Ink Agates/Archival Resist

Day 4: Re-inkers

Watercolouring with Re-inkers/Layered Misting

Day 5: Spray Inks & Stains

Stained Kraft Resist/Stamping with Stains/Marbled Stains

Day 6: Distress Markers (can’t wait for these to arrive at The Paperie!)

Picture will be here soon….I hope!

Day 7: Embossing (Regular and Distress)

Nostalgic Batik/Rusted Enamel/Distress Powder Resist

Day 8: Paint (Acrylic and Distress Crackle)

Dabber Resist/Crackle Paint Resist/Shattered Stains

Day 9: Perfect Pearls

Perfect Distress Mist/Perfect Distress/Perfect Distress Splatter

Day 10: Distress Stickles

Rock Candy Distress Stickles

Aren’t they cool? My faves are the Stamping with Stains, the Nostalgic Batik, and the Perfect Distress – love them!

This was truly one of the best classes (along with Jennifer McGuire’s Inspiration Showcase) I’ve ever taken – great techniques, lots to learn, and tons of info on the differences in inks, paints, and mediums.

Now, I just can’t wait to play some more! But first, I have to redo a class LO, make the May LO for the Yearlong class, and do a special project for The Paperie – maybe I’ll find a way to incorporate some of the new stuff!

1. I’m seriously considering doing another online class – this one. Lots going on in our lives right now and I think a “Grateful, Every Day” journal would be a fabulous thing to keep me focused on the big picture. Learning how to make a new album and doing some art journalling is just a nice side benefit!

2. Saw this on Pinterest and, considering how much the kiddies here *love* yoghurt chips, I gave them a try – big success, super easy, and they thought they had a treat! 🙂 It doesn’t get any better than that!

Strawberry Frozen Yoghurt

3. The new Paperie monthly kit comes out on Saturday – they go fast if you don’t have a subscription so call in to be a subscriber and have it guaranteed each month! Beautiful blues and yellows in this one, with an amazing stamp set, used by Kristina Werner here. Lots of My Mind’s Eye, Authentique, American Crafts, Bazzill, and more!

March Kit

4. Got my mom’s sewing machine today! That means my happy little moments class will finally begin! Looking forward to sewing on paper! No worries, I’ll post some pics when I get something done!

5. Making my friend Rose’s Moroccan Pork Roast tonight – super yummy! It has apples, onion, cinnamon, apricot jam, and is made in the crock pot. Thanks, Rose, it’s a staple around here, even the kids “gobble it all up,” as M says!

6. G wanted to be upside on the couch this morning. I tried to take a picture but he kept laughing and saying, “I wiggle my bum at you, Mama!” so it’s a bit soft – oh well!

G, upside down

All in all, quiet around here, which is very nice for a change!

Thank You and a New Class

First off, this is for all of you:

thanks!

Thanks so much for the wonderful birthday greetings and love for the stitched tag tutorial – it’s ones of my faves now and I know I’ll be using that technique a lot. And it was so nice to get happy messages in my comments all day! Also, Lawn Fawn stamps and Sakura pens? Perfect pairing!

Second, let’s talk about Sunday and the first 2012 Yearlong Album Class at The Paperie!

(As an aside, I believe – but I could be wrong – there are a few slightly modified Yearlong Album kits if you want to join in but can’t make the time commitment or live too far away or just want the paper and album to play with! Just contact Meghan at The Paperie if you’re interested and we’ll see what we can do.)

We were an almost full house – 20 people are registered for the 11 classes and 18 were able to make it on Sunday. It was a tight fit but we all got cozy with each other – I know some new friends were made pretty quickly in those close quarters!

Close Quarters!

We got a lot done – the cover page,

Cover Page

the January spread,

January

and the February spread.

February

It was fun and productive though I’m sure for a couple of the newbies it was a bit overwhelming – these classes can get loud and they’re pretty fast paced! Everyone got through it though, and we got a start on all of the calendar pages too – I call that a successful class!

Working away...

Finally, I got a couple of surprise birthday cakes near the end – my friend Lori and my mom both had the same idea and brought in the chocolate, which was definitely well received by all!

Chocolate Cake!

I hope you all have a wonderful Leap Day!

Kit Clubs and a Layout!

13 Monday Feb 2012

Posted by Sara in Uncategorized

So, my local scrapbooking store, The Paperie, recently started doing a monthly kit club and I’m loving it!

I’m a slow (slooooooowwwwww) scrapbooker – I can’t decide on paper, I move things around, I just can’t “commit and stick,” as a friend would say.

But since the kits, I’m a fast scrapping machine!

Now, let’s not get crazy here, two of the four kits haven’t seen the light of day yet, nor has the one Studio Calico kit I’ve received. However, when I do open the bag, things flow smoothly and quickly. There’s my patterned paper, my cardstock, my letter stickers, and this month, my stamps, ready to go!

I came home from teaching a class yesterday and did this one:

this is US

It’s an old pic of D and I at Eastport Beach, where we got engaged, the day of my uncle’s wedding, and just 2 weeks before M was born.

When I was cleaning the scrap space, I put 3 or four old pictures aside in an envelope to scrap. I just pulled out the kit, grabbed a pic, and went for it!

I think what made this super quick and easy was the Amy Tangerine Daybook that was in the kit – I just tore pages from that instead of cutting paper. Apart from the kit contents, I only added mist, washi tape, and a Sakura Stardust pen (side note: these rock! I use them on everything for a hint of shimmer. Really. The best.)

See the shimmer? Awesome!

And since those other three items are always on my desk, I didn’t have to go looking for any product, it was all at my fingertips.

I think the Paperie has one February kit left, call them if you want it – it has the Daybook, a bunch of patterned papers and cardstock, Coredinations cardstock, sanding file, velvet and stitched ribbons, a 7 Gypsies tag, a Technique Tuesday stamp, Studio Calico border stickers and chipboard alphas, and Prima alpha stickers. It’s a great kit, with mostly winter papers, but you can obviously make summer pages too!

Have a good one today – it’s actually nice enough to go outside around here – yay!

Today I want to remember…

06 Monday Feb 2012

Family, friends

… to hug my kiddies a lot, and cuddle them really hard.

…to say “I Love You” to the ones I sometimes don’t because I know they already know it.

…that life just isn’t always all that fair, so I better make the best of it right now.

…how lucky I really am.

Late last week I got some terrible news that I’m still trying to process. A friend called to share the news that someone we used to work with died fairly suddenly.

He was 27.

He left a beautiful 3 month old baby boy, an amazing wife, and too many family and friends to count. I consider myself lucky to have known him.

I consider myself extremely lucky to have seen him a short while ago, and seen his absolute delight in his tiny boy. It’s a good memory to have for the last.

Take the time today to remember to stop and enjoy those you love – no matter what age they leave us, we never have long enough.

Sara

(Thank you, Ali Edwards, for the great starting point.)
