ICAD 2013 | June 6: there is no doubt

Earlier this week a friend found out that she lost the very much wanted and already very much loved little peanut she was carrying.

It’s been a difficult time.

So this one is for her and her family:

there is no doubt

There is no doubt the peanut was so loved and wanted.

There is no doubt they’re devastated right now.

And there is no doubt that their world has changed but will still be beautiful on the other side.

ICAD 2013 | June 5: humbug

This one is a bit of a mess.

I had an awesome background of Dylusions Ink sprays and shimmer mist, and then added some stamping with Distress Paint – also awesome.

And then, well, I don’t know what happened. It all fell apart. Sigh.

After some covering and collaging and layering I finally threw my hands up and said, “Meh.” And then stamped “humbug” on the card:

humbug

It said it all about what I was  thinking at that point!

I do like the texture of the cheesecloth and the staples and the fun holes:

humbug - texture

And this lego man cracks me up:

humbug - lego man

So I guess there are *some* good points! 🙂

ICAD 2013 | June 4: meow

My brother was here from BC for a month and his girlfriend joined him this past week. But today they left to go home again. 😦

And for those of you who don’t know Canadian geography that well, Mount Pearl and Vancouver are about as far apart as you can possibly get. They’re waaaaaay over there on the west coast. Boo.

So, in honour of “Uncle Grayma,” I made this ICAD:

meow

Confused? Well, if I ever find it I’ll post a link to a YouTube video of Graham, serenading a friend of his with a composition of his own. I’m assuming it’s his own, I don’t think anyone else in the world would claim it.

He simply plays his guitar and sings, “Meow, meow, meow,” over and over. Hilariously funny to me, maybe not so funny to you all but I’m going to make you suffer through anyway. As soon as I find the link….

I used some new Twinks on this one because 1. they’re new, 2. they’re shimmery, and 3. green in Graham’s favourite colour. It actually runs in the family – Matthew (my other brother), Gabe, and I all claim green as ours as well. It must be genetic!

meow - cat

And since I can’t seem to do anything without some dimension, I added light molding paste through one of my fave stencils (thanks again, Julie! You make the best designs!)

meow - paste and shine

Back tomorrow with another one!

ICAD 2013 | June 3: unsupervised

Gabe saw Molly have so much fun painting with my mists the other day that he wanted a turn too – so today you get to see what he made during our crafty time yesterday!

He learned from her mistakes and didn’t try to make an actual picture – he just painted colours. He had a blast doing it, especially the date stamping part – he picked the date himself.

gabe - painted mist

For mine, I took the paper towel we had been using the past few days for cleaning up and pasted it to the card.

i am currently unsupervised

After it dried, I smeared Glass Gel Beads through a stencil, heated them, and then coloured a few with mist (since it was out anyway!). I left the paper towel raggedy, I love the organic look of the edges that way:

i am currently unsupervised - glass bead gel

The texture left by the paper towel is pretty cool so I tried not to cover it all up:

i am currently unsupervised - paper towel texture

I finished by spraying a blank card with the same mist I painted the gel beads, stamped my sentiment, courtesy of Dyan Reaveley naturally, and cut it out to add to the card.

I am currently unsupervised, indeed!

Blog Hop, Giveaway, Simple Scrapper

ssbloghop-2013The Simple Scrapper Team is back again with a brand new blog hop and chance to win! Use the Rafflecopter widget below to enter a giveaway for a one month trial membership at Simple Scrapper. There are three ways to enter and three winners will be selected. To be eligible, you must enter by 11:59pm CDT on Wednesday, June 5.

But first, welcome! You should have come from Van‘s blog if you’re following along.

NOTE: Suzette, if you’re reading this, STOP NOW! You’ll ruin your birthday present if you keep going! 🙂

Sorry all, had to warn off my best and oldest friend – hopefully she’ll take the hint and go away!

This month had some amazing templates to choose from and it was hard to pick one to work with – I wanted to try them all! I finally chose letter#1 and stretched it into a 12×12:flyI used the newest Paperie club kit along with some Studio Calico PL kit pieces and stamps. I’m still loving the punched borders!

fly - punching & embelliesSome shimmery modeling creme behind the photo to mimic the border punch:

fly - stencilled doily

And great letter stickers for the title finished it off:

fly - title

Don’t you love all the butterfly pins? I stuck them into the paper and taped them down in the back with washi tape – thanks to Cathie for that great idea!

For my story starter this month I decided to do a canvas instead of a traditional LO:

you&me

Almost everything on this one came from a Studio Calico PL kit – don’t you love that big ampersand stamp? It looks amazing when embossed!

you&me - title

I also embossed the paper dolls (love the heart that their hands form) on the journaling tag:

you&me - tag

I tucked the tag behind the photo because 1. it’s what I normally do, and 2. since this a display piece I felt it was better hidden. There’s nothing very secretive written down there, just funny memories I have of the two of us since we were 6!

I finished it off by stamping the sides of the canvas so they wouldn’t be so bare when it was hanging on the wall:

you&me - edges

You really need to go check out the rest of the Design Team’s work if you haven’t already – they’ve done some beautiful work, as always!

ICAD 2013 | June 2: wish…

Molly sat down and made a card with me so I have two to show you today!

I was playing with my mists so of course, she needed to play as well. She dipped paintbrush in the open bottles and started to make a pirate ship but the mist did not cooperate with that plan! She did end up with some great shapes, patterns, and colours and was happy with it – I call that all good!

molly - pirate ship

For mine, I knew I wanted to make “wish flowers” – those fluffly, seed laden, end-of-their-life dandelions that are everywhere around us right now. Molly, Gabe, and I went for a walk yesterday and found a bunch which we promptly wished upon and blew everywhere.

I painted the card with gesso (having fun playing with that right now) and then sprayed and smeared mist all over it.

wish

I punched holes for the dandelions with my old eyelet setter then masked the rest of the card and sprayed Mister Huey’s Blizzard over the holes:

wish - shimmer

It’s hard to see, but the way I scraped the layer of gesso over the card left some flat texture that was picked up when the mist went over it – in real life it adds a lot to the look of the card:

wish - texture

I”ll be back later with a card I made for an event this weekend!

ICAD 2013 | June 1: angel’s wings

Gesso, ICAD, Maya Road

It’s here, it’s here! Index Card A Day is back and I’m super excited to see what I can put on an index card this year!

I only started today, a day late, since Darrell’s grandmother died last week and the funeral was yesterday. Things have been a little crazy and busy around here.

This card was definitely inspired by the events of the past few days:

angel's wings

I started with gesso, embedded a Maya Road chipboard wing, and misted. I got a marbling effect in one of the open areas in the wing which I need to explore a bit more – that will probably make an appearance in a class sometime soon! 🙂

angel's wings - marbling

I stamped the sentiment with some new alpha stamps and my favourite Jet Black Archival ink. Love that stuff – I sprayed over it with shimmer mist right after I stamped and it still didn’t budge!

And the dimension from the embedded wing is awesome sauce!

angel's wings - dimensionI’ll be back tomorrow with today’s card. Also, click any of the photos and you’ll see the larger pics in Flickr, along with the supply list!

YLA2013 | May class, part 2

Sorry it’s so late – today had some unexpected happenings and news – but here is the second finished LO from this past Sunday’s class.

happy

With this one, I layered a couple of mist colours and let them drip, plus I spattered shimmer mist to create sparkly water drops. I also smeared modeling paste over the stencil in such a way that most of the words/paste picked up colour and blended into the background. I did this on purpose so that the word “happy” stood out in white on the photo itself.

happy - stencil

Finally, I layered stickers, paper scraps, circles, and stamps under the picture.

happy - layers

Lots of colour and movement here – perfect for a busy four-year-old boy!

Mixed Media Layout, Yearlong Album, YLA2013

This past Sunday was another Yearlong Album class and we played with gesso, Dylusions Ink Spray, and modeling paste.

may - if you believeIt was fun to see how much the gesso could change not only the look of the background page but also how it reacted to and played with inks.

I also showed how fun certain mists are when they interact with molding paste:

May - wordsMine was very subtle but I love how the paste picks up the mist colour as it dries! And look at the shimmery spots – Luminarte Radiant Rain mist is *so* shiny!

Of course, to finish it all off I used lots of layers of tissue, book print, stickers, stamping, and buttons – love the dimension!

May - layers

I’ll be back tomorrow with the second page – I started it in the class as a demo of sorts so even the class peeps haven’t seen this one completed yet!
