I took another class at The Paperie this past weekend – this one was all about how to make your own kit and Krista did an awesome job of showing us how to pull one together from both new products and from your stash.

Mine is a bit of a combo – I found the large patterned paper, the one on the top right, at the shop and loved it, so that was my starting point. I added 3 more papers, plus the washi tape and letter stickers I got in class, and came home to finish it off. Love all the bits and bobs that were forgotten in my scrap cave – a kit is the perfect way to get them in sight and use them up!

What I really loved about this class was being able to customize the kit to my preferences. All the colours are ones I want to use and since I owned most of the stuff anyway, I know I like (or used to like!) all of it.

I’m calling this one Carnivale!

Carnivale! a kit by sarathings

The name seemed to fit with the colours, the banners, and the fun patterns, especially the large one.

There’s lots in here but I’ve had some of the chipboard and stick pins for longer than I care to say! If I can get on the ball and pull together another kit or two before the retreat, I’ll be able to pack a lot lighter than I usually do!

Now, an update from last week. I finished the second LO from Rae Lynn’s Book of Me class and I love how it turned out! I had to hide the “s” on the end of “simple pleasures” and extend the title and it all worked out really well.

An Unexpected Simple Pleasure

Plus, I really like the dimension of the banners and the shine of the glossy accents in the camera.

And yes, Rae Lynn, the journaling is done but I forgot to take a pic!

If any of you have a better name for my kit, throw it out there – I was a bit stumped, titles are not my strong point! 🙂 Also, I am planning a technique post tomorrow, fingers crossed I get it done in time!

Basic Grey, Design Team, The Paperie

Krista blogged her regular 5 for Friday today and one of her 5 was about how a particular card would look great “on a layout-opening up and unfolding like an accordion. It would be a nice way to hide some journaling and supporting photos.”

And I immediately remembered a certain LO I did many years ago.

The Paperie used to have an inhouse design team of which I was a member. I remember applying, then making it as a finalist. The last step I had to go through was to pick up a sample pack, a small kit really, and do a LO – all the finalists got the same kit. I walked into the store to get mine and saw Chris and Janna, the owners, sitting on the sofa that used to be in the old location. And they were watching me intently. Weird. Then I got the kit and they burst out laughing. Apparently they had been doing that all day, just watching the finalists faces as we saw what we had to work with – big, black floral BG paper from the Black Tie collection and super wide black ribbon, among other things. We were all horrified and terrified at the same time. What the heck to make with that?!?!?

Well, here’s what I did (click on any pictures to view them larger):

It was almost a year after our wedding and I had never scrapped this particular picture, taken on the deck of my family cabin. I figured flowers must go with a wedding picture, right? There were more pictures that I wanted to use as well but then, as now, I veered towards single photo LO’s and hidden journalling – so I made an accordion album behind the flower to showcase the other pictures.

And I hid another piece of that floral paper behind the main photo and added my journalling to it.

I called it done and was more than happy to be finished thinking about what to do with that paper! Obviously, it wasn’t a terrible LO since I made the design team and loved every minute of it – though I grumbled a lot under my breath since everything I did those days was full of fussy cutting….. But that’s a post for another day!

Have a great weekend everyone! I’m taking Krista’s kit making class tomorrow and heading out with the kiddies for Pumpkinfest at Lester’s Farm Market – there should (crossing my fingers) be some good pics to show next week!

An update, brownies, and a class I took…

Sorry for the little blog break here – I’ve been crazy busy since returning from Orlando and there just aren’t enough hours in the day…

I’ve been completing the few unfinished projects from the show – I made 7 mini albums plus other items so there was a lot of little odds and ends that needed a final touch or two!

Bazzill – Christmas Lickety Slip Album

Creative Imaginations – Beautiful You Mixed Media Album

Basically Bare and Graphic 45 – Nutcracker Suite Easel Album

7 Gypsies and Canvas Corp – Epicurean Library Drawer

Creative Imaginations – Holly Jolly Altered Album

I’m only showing you the sneaks here of a few things but if you want the full reveal, all the details, and to hear about the fun we had then you need to sign up for the Show and Tell at The Paperie on Tuesday, October 23! I think there may be some giveaways too…. 🙂

I’m heading over to have wine and chit chat with a friend tonight so I thought I’d bring some goodies with me – brownies!

Brownie Batter!

I took two of my favourite recipes, made a change or two and combined them to make gluten free mascarpone brownies with ricotta topping. They look and smell yummy and I’ll post an update later with how they taste! I already know the batter was good….

And they really should be good because if there’s one thing I know how to bake well, it’s brownies! That’s not ego my friends, it’s just the simple truth! 🙂 But I can’t roast a chicken to save my life…. UPDATE: They are the bomb…. 🙂

yummy, yummy in my tummy!

Finally, I carved out a little time on Saturday morning to take a class from my friend Rae Lynn, the queen of clean and simple LO’s – her work is always gorgeous! She has started a new class series to do a Book of Me and the two LO’s we did are awesome!

I only took one picture with me for the class but the sweater I was wearing was the perfect colour for the papers and since Miss Smarty Pants Rae Lynn brought her camera and Canon Selphy printer, we took a snap, printed it and I was in business! It always feels good to go home with a completed LO!

i am…

I changed this second one a little – the background paper was a light tan/brown and I had a piece of Bo Bunny Vintage Double Dot paper that was the exact shade of my shirt so I used that instead. Also, I think I’m going to change the title to “An unexpected pleasure” and do my journalling on one thing rather than do a list of several “simple pleasures.” I could have had this one done but I was really uncertain about the journalling and decided that focusing on one unexpected pleasure – my camera – would work better for me for this LO. So now that I’ve settled on that, it will be done tonight, RLOK, I promise!

an unexpected pleasure

I love how the bright background paired with the black title, splatters, and stars make my camera pop!

And that’s been my life this week, crazy and full – how have you all been?

Sketchbook!

I spent last night at The Paperie taking Cathie’s Starburst and Pinwheel Class with some scrappy friends. We had a blast and the LO’s were awesome! Equally awesome? The stuff I came home with!

How do you all feel about classes? Are you happy to simply do them and come home with your projects or do you like to get extra stuff too?

Me? I’m all about the add-ons! Love getting a little something to carry away, especially if I learn something new and get a product so I can recreate the projects in my own way. Last night, we all got a pack of Thickers (I already had the green so I exchanged them for the black) and a 6×6 Amy Tangerine Sketchbook paper pad – pretty sweet, my friends!

The starburst LO we completed was this one:

oh dear… (design credit: Cathie Reed)

Of course, I had to make things difficult and use different papers so that slowed me down a little, but I love the end result. Cathie also showed us how to make a stencil from our starburst and how to tone down the bright papers we were using.

I had to come home to finish this one since the picture I brought just didn’t work. I’m glad to get this photo on a LO though, because it was a pretty funny day – M & P chose to colour each other, but with non-washable red marker. They had streaks on their faces for days! 🙂

The second LO featured a pie chart and again, Cathie suggested a couple of ways of doing it and some other project ideas too.

for you, mama! (design credit: Cathie Reed)

Again, I made things hard on myself and used different papers which meant time sorting out what to put where but at least I got these photos scrapped, since they probably wouldn’t have been otherwise!

M & G love to pick me flowers and on this day, shortly after the dandelions came out in bloom, they insisted on keeping them in a “vase” of water. As you can tell, I’m also in love with the Ali Edwards photo overlays from Designer Digitals. I have to force myself not to drop them onto every picture – a battle I lost for this LO!

Hope you liked them – go over and tell Cathie what you think – maybe we can get her to teach some more classes! 🙂

It’s Friday! and a LO…

Friday! Yay! I have a crop to go to tonight and we have both adult and kiddie birthday parties this weekend – it’s going to be a fun one! Plus, the weather is still holding, knock on wood! 🙂

I don’t know why I haven’t posted this LO yet, it’s one I did for a LO tag back in August but since I didn’t post it then, it gives me some eye candy to post for you now!

Happy Together

This is one of my favourite pics from the trip M and I took to New Brunswick in July. She and P had the best time – I only wished we all lived a little closer to each other!

I used the August Paperie club kit for this – I loved the Dear Lizzy patterned papers and chipboard pieces, so fun! Of course, I had to add some wood veneer:

I love those little people. Really love them – I have 3 packs so that I never run out! 🙂

And I had to add some hidden journaling because, as per usual, I didn’t think about it until the LO was finished so it had to be tucked away!

A great Dina Wakley stencil and some Studio Calico Shine for the background and that was it. I love the neutral background and photo with the soft colours of the embellishments – not my norm but I think I’ll have to try it again!

Hope you all have a fabulous weekend and the weather is good wherever you may be!

Classes, ICAD, ICAD2, kindergarten, Printstagram, Project Life, The Crafter's Workshop, The Paperie

Yes, yes, I know it’s Friday (late on Friday!) but yesterday was a big day and it got away from me!

1. Miss M started school yesterday! There’s no pre-k here so it was truly her first day ever and she was uber excited!

Me, not so much… However, it hasn’t been as bad as I thought it would and she loves it!

2. I’m starting Project Life. Yup, today is the last day of week one for me and I’m still not sure how to go about organizing it all. Please help me! Anyone who is doing this or has done it, give me your best tips – the things you’ve learned that work well and the things you’d do differently next time. In order for me to do this, I’m going to need all the help I can get!

Already I’m overwhelmed with the amount of content for this week alone: long weekend at the cabin, school starting, swimming starting for G… Go ahead, ask how many pictures I’ve taken!

3. I’m doing a new class at The Paperie next week and it’s all about stencils! Better still, it’s all about clean and simple stencils! So, those of you who hate to get your hands dirty (I know who you are!) this will show you how to use this great tool without getting mist under your nails! 🙂

4. I’ve started in on the last 10 ICAD’s I have left to make. I promise a blog post on Monday for the next one on the list!

5. I’m considering getting some stuff done from Printstagram – has anyone used it? Thoughts? Shipping and quality good? What size do you like?

The tiny books look neat and I thought they might make fun gifts for the kiddies at Christmas!

Have a great weekend everyone!

2012 Yearlong Album, BoBunny, Simple Stories, The Paperie

The weather has been so amazing here that the blog has taken a bit of a backseat this week – sorry!

Since I missed my regular Things on Thursday post yesterday, I decided to steal from Krista for this week and do a 5 on Friday (thanks, Krista!)

1. Crop night at The Paperie tonight – yay! Love getting out with my friends and having a scrappy night, finished off with food, of course! Are you going? Still time to sign up! 🙂

2. I’m teaching my Yearlong Album 2012 class on Sunday and we’ll be working on the September LO. Here’s a sneak for those of you going:

3. The Paperie has an awesome Facebook page and they’ve started tweeting – are you following them? You should!

4. There’s some pretty cool distressing tips on the Bo Bunny blog – the first one looks awesome!

5. I love Simple Stories, and the mini album that DT member Wendy Morris is showing on their blog is amazing – super simple and gorgeous!

Hope you all have a great weekend and crossing my fingers I’ll see some of you tonight!

12 on Twelve, Classes, The Paperie

This is a super quick one but I’ll be back later with a full Tuesday Techniques post!

Today is the 12th and I remembered this month – yay! So who’s with me for the 12 on Twelve? It’s easy, just take 12 pictures through the day and then share them tomorrow. I love this project – it’s quick, easy, and gives me a fun overview every month!

Also, I’m teaching at The Paperie tomorrow night. It’s a fun technique class all about Distress Markers! We’ll be making 10 tags with instructions so you can go home and play later, plus  the techniques can all be transferred to LO’s, cards, etc.

Don’t worry if you don’t have the markers, there will be some to share and lots to buy (you’ll want to when you see how much fun they are!) Call Meghan at the shop to sign up or get a kit!

See you all later today!

Daisy Yellow, ICAD, ICAD2, The Paperie

Oh yeah, I’m ready for the weekend!

I have a fun party at my mom’s tonight, all ladies from what I can gather, and there will be some fun ones in attendance! I’m looking forward to lots of laughing, a little wine, and good food – what more could I ask for?

And tomorrow night Cathie, Tina, and I are getting together for our first Art Journal night. I can’t wait to see what kind of mess we’re going to get in! 🙂

I have a Paperie Pick post going live later today or tomorrow at The Paperie blog, so look out for that – it’s all about club kits and here’s a sneaky peek:

Finally, some fun news I’ve been holding onto – I’m a hostess for Week 2 of Index Card a Day over at Daisy Yellow! There will be 1-2 hostesses each day of Week 2 using one of the 10 prompts to make their card. It starts today, so go on over and check out the fabulous cards today’s artists created! And look out for my post on Monday – I’m hoping for some good inspiration from my prompt by then…

Have a great weekend!

Designer Duos

Designer Duo, The Paperie

Yesterday, Cathie and I taught a fun class at The Paperie called Designer Duos – Part 1 (I hope)!

I know she and I loved it and it pushed both of us out of our comfort zones a touch since we used colours for our base papers that we never use – orange for me and green for her. I don’t have pictures on Cathie’s LO yet but I’ll post that here when I add them. For now, here’s her (unfinished) LO, done by me!

my boy

Love how she used the stencil, with 4 layers of acrylic paint! It’s super cool and dimensional, and the confetti was awesome, so big right now as an embellishment. She also die cut hearts from a circle of wood veneer, backed them with patterned paper and then added glossy accents – one of my favourite things – but the best part was the title; we wrote our words, then hand cut them, love it!

my boy – shiny glossy!

My LO turned into two LO’s! The first one I did had a smaller centre section and I felt it was too little space for a pic, so I turned it into a home decor piece:

Like a bird I sing…

…but then I felt bad for the people who wanted to be able to add pictures so at 11:30 the night before, I changed it up a little to make a bigger central portion:

You make my heart smile

…and then I gave everyone the choice of which LO they did. That means trying to teach two sets of slightly different instructions at once – ha!

I think everyone had fun – we even had three out-of-towners! I love seeing new faces at classes – hopefully we didn’t scare them away and they’ll make the trip in to play with us again! Thanks for coming ladies, it was great to meet you all!

I’ll be back tomorrow with a new Tuesday Technique series – get ready to stencil!
