Yeah, so the posting of my Art Journal pages just didn’t happen yesterday. C’est la vie, I’ll show them to you today!

Our Art Journal night was all about colour and it was fun, fun, fun. As a side note, Dina Wakley’s book Art Journal Freedom is a fabulous reference book for colour theory – and a bunch of other things too!

Out first page was about monochromatic colour, though mine ended up being more analogous, which was fine with me:

yesSome reduction stenciling ala Dina Wakley, a pop of contrast colour through a Ronda Palazzari stencil for The Crafter’s Workshop, and some awesome Dina Wakley Media stamps for Ranger. I also added a pop of colour on one of the hearts:

yes heartI also added a doodled border with my new favourite Sharpie White Paint Pen – it’s all kinds of goodness.

The second page was all about split complementary colours:

beautiful

I used Silks glaze so my complementary colours are quite muted. I like it but I think I’m going to go back in and punch it up a bit. I already did that a little by flicking deep orange paint splatters but I want more. This page isn’t really finished yet, I don’t think.

I added a cut out face from Dina Wakley’s stamps and painted circles which I then journaled in.

beautiful face

Like it overall, but it definitely needs something more. We’ll have to see…

Also, go to Julie’s blog today – she’s got her weekly Art Journal everyday post up and you can link up and/or see lots of inspiring pages over there!

While Dina Wakley was in town teaching in all her fabulousness last weekend we all got into a small conversation about Art Journaling – is it really Art *Journaling* if you don’t journal?

And I don’t journal – I play.

So I decided to push myself and start. I  have actually added some journaling to almost all my pages and have enjoyed every second.

Then I took some of my unfinished pages and went to work on them. This is one of my faves – I love the background so much that it has taken me this long to cover it up! I always tell classes when I teach, “Don’t get attached,” and I got attached. It was time to bite the bullet and move on.

This is how it turned out:

just be

I love that the background is still peeking through with some subtle colour:

just be - layers

And aren’t all those layers and doodles fun?

I especially like the pop of colour behind the Dina Wakley stamp – it really draws your eye to the figure and the start of the journaling:

just be - figure

I’m totally inspired to keep journaling now, and am more excited than ever to play and make a hot mess – after all, there’s always a way to turn it around!

Dina Wakley, The Paperie

We’re all very excited to be doing a entire weekend of classes with Dina and, in anticipation, The Paperie has been doing a weekly countdown of sorts.

Each Friday a new blog post is going up focusing on inspiration via Dina’s work, or featuring some of her favourite products. Cathie has been doing some fabulous posts and I had one go live today.

Go check it out here!

The Undones aka Layouts ala KP

01 Wednesday May 2013

Dina Wakley, Kelly Purkey, Scrapbook Layout

Today I’m channeling Cathie and posting some “Undones.”

While I was at The Paperie retreat this past weekend I finished up the LO’s we did while Kelly Purkey was here teaching in March. They’re super simple but all done!

KP - the best 2

Apart from adding some washi tape (Thanks Cathy!) this is pretty much the LO that Kelly did in class – a bit of misting through a stencil, some awesome Dear Lizzy glitter alphas, and fun beaded adhesive strips:

KP - the best 2 glitterI completely changed up the next one because… well just because I wanted to!

KP - love youI stamped the stencil after misting through it, changed the colour of the flowers and the placements of the pics, added a tear strip under the photos to ground them, and punched a border on the edges. However, I did keep the flowers centres – the dots from the i’s on the sticker sheet, pure genius:

KP - love you flowersFinally, I went kind of in between – this started out as Kelly’s LO and then I just kept adding blocks so it’s a little fuller than hers was but has the same base:

KP - happyI love the clear embossed resist ampersand:

KP - happy ampersand

And I added the popped up “happy” diecut from the Dear Lizzy pack:

KP - happy word

This was a super fun class and Kelly used some awesome papers, stencils, and mists. I think it’s safe to say that we all had a great weekend when she was here!

In other news, The Paperie finally announced this weekend that Dina Wakley is coming in August to teach for a whole weekend! If you live in Atlantic Canada, plan a trip to NL for mid-August because this is going to be an incredible opportunity to learn from one of the best in the industry with regards to Art Journaling and Mixed Media. To say I’m excited would be an understatement – vibrating might be more accurate!

Be BOLD.

Art Journal, Dina Wakley, Donna Downey, Dylusions, Julie Fei-Fan Balzer, Mixed media, The Crafter's Workshop, Unity Stamp Co.

As soon as The Paperie received the Sally Carly stencils by Dina Wakley for The Crafter’s Workshop, I had to give them a test run – along with the Tiny Circles and Pie Chart stencils designed by Julie Fei-Fan Balzer and Ronda Palazzari, and a couple of Dylusions ones too.

To begin, I re-enforced my journal seam with gold chevron washi tape and I love, love, love how it resisted the mist on the gold parts! That was completely unexpected because I just grabbed the first washi tape at hand and stuck it on – awesome surprise!

be BOLD. - washi

I used both the positive and negative pieces of the stencil to get different layers of colour with Dylusions Ink Sprays and black gesso. I also did a lot of outlining with my white Uniball Signo Gel Pen, some stamping in black archival ink, and layers of white gesso, Inka Gold, and shimmer mist through the other stencils.

I love how all the layers turned out , especially the Tiny Circles on the head of the first girl:

And the Perfect Pearls Mist through a Dylusions stencil on the second:

be BOLD. - head2

Finally, I added Donna Downey phrases from her Art & Possibility set, available through Unity Stamp Co. This may be my new favourite stamp set – the sentiments are fabulous!

be BOLD. - words1 be BOLD. - words be BOLD. - words2

All in all, I’m pretty happy with the results – and I really love all the stencils and media that came into play!

be BOLD.What fun things have you done this week? Link me up in the comments – I’d love to see it!

It’s Friday! and a LO…

Friday! Yay! I have a crop to go to tonight and we have both adult and kiddie birthday parties this weekend – it’s going to be a fun one! Plus, the weather is still holding, knock on wood! 🙂

I don’t know why I haven’t posted this LO yet, it’s one I did for a LO tag back in August but since I didn’t post it then, it gives me some eye candy to post for you now!

Happy Together

This is one of my favourite pics from the trip M and I took to New Brunswick in July. She and P had the best time – I only wished we all lived a little closer to each other!

I used the August Paperie club kit for this – I loved the Dear Lizzy patterned papers and chipboard pieces, so fun! Of course, I had to add some wood veneer:

I love those little people. Really love them – I have 3 packs so that I never run out! 🙂

And I had to add some hidden journaling because, as per usual, I didn’t think about it until the LO was finished so it had to be tucked away!

A great Dina Wakley stencil and some Studio Calico Shine for the background and that was it. I love the neutral background and photo with the soft colours of the embellishments – not my norm but I think I’ll have to try it again!

Hope you all have a fabulous weekend and the weather is good wherever you may be!

Christy Tomlinson, Cocoa Daisy, Dina Wakley, Elise Blaha Cripe, Julie Fei-Fan Balzer, October Afternoon, sketch

1. I’ve mentioned before that I’m not a huge fan of sketches, I just don’t find they work for me though I know a lot of people absolutely love them. That being said, this one from October Afternoon totally inspired me and I can’t wait to make a LO from it!

2. I love Dina Wakley‘s art. And this page is awesome.

3. I’m stoked to see this kit. I’m a huge fan of Julie Fei-Fan Balzer and she has designed an exclusive stamp and stencil for this – I. Can’t. Wait.

4. Elise Blaha Cripe is a super fun and talented blogger who designs stamps (along with doing a bunch of other things!) which she sells through her online stamp shop. There are so many I want but the “today is” stamp is on the top of my list. Sooooo many things I can add in that blank space!

5. By now, you should know of my love for Christy Tomlinson and the She Art workshops I’m taking online. She’s so much fun to listen to and watch and she now has all the free videos from her blog in one spot! These are worth the time to watch, trust me!

If you’re in the capital city area of NL, I hope you’re joining me at The Paperie tomorrow for crop night! Make sure you call them and sign up – always fabulous times!
