Paperie Card Kit | July: Part 3

I know, I know, I’m being super slow about posting these LO’s but I’m almost done! Here’s the last one, with a mini tutorial about how it all came together.

First of all, I smeared Silver Croco through the Chunky Chevron stencil by Balzer Designs for The Crafter’s Workshop to make a place for my photo. You can see from the picture what’s it like wet (on the left) and dry (on the right):

I love the shine and crackle! Plus, this paint can be heat set immediately and still crack – that’s an awesome quality in my impatient books! And when you overheat it you get bubbles along with the cracks, making fabulous texture:

Once that was all dry, I decided to make a fun interactive piece. I like to have one picture on my LO’s but there were a couple more I wanted to include. Also, I like to hide my journaling so I needed to figure out a way to get all those elements on the page and still only show one photo. The solution? One of the kraft envelopes in the kit! I added tape to the flap:

Then I added little patterned paper and sticker flags to the edge:

Once it was adhered to the background page, I had a spot to put my extra pics and a pocket for my journaling – you just use the flags to flip it open:

I simply made a journaling card, wrote on it, and tucked it inside the envelope:

I added my title with the Simple Stories alpha stickersin the kit, doodled around them, and finished the whole thing off with some washi tape that was in the last Card Kit:

I have one more item to show you from this kit – I pretty much used it all up! – and I’m hoping to post that for you early next week. This weekend is going to be all tied up with Dina Wakley coming to the Paperie and I. Can’t. Wait!

A few days ago I showed you how I had an idea for these pages, went through an epic failure, and then found redemption on better and bigger paper.

Today, you get the final product!

The rainbow page is my favourite – I love the colours and the pictures so much:

I first sponged glossy gel medium through a stencil, then added puddles of Distress Paint to the edge. I misted until I ran out of water (that’s only a slight exaggeration!) and let the colours run down the page. The texture is from rolling paper towels over to blot up the excess water. How cool is that?!?!

This second page is based on a Simple Scrapper template from the July 2013 Premium Member templates:

Once again you start with glossy gel medium through a stencil, then add puddles of paint to the middle of the page. Mist with water and tip the paper to allow the paint to blend and then run in different directions.

The resist is fabulous and has a great shine in real life:

I used some Heidi Swapp fabric that I died with the paint and some new Studio Calico wood veneer to add dimension and layers to the top:

I have a home daycare. That means kiddies running around and kiddies mean parents with birthdays. And we always try to do something about birthdays around here!

Last week, one of the moms had a birthday and so her daughter (she’s two) and I sat down to make a gift. And I think it’s one of my faves so far!

Years ago I bought some great frames, I think they’re by EK Success, and of course, I forgot all about them. Such is the life of a crafter, hey? Anyway, I rediscovered them a couple of weeks ago and thought they would be perfect for this type of project. They’re actually primed canvas board frames, ready to alter, and I bought two different sizes – one has a 3.5×5 opening and the other, the one we used, has a 4×6 opening.

I sat Miss I down with some crayons and said, “Have at it!.” And she coloured up a storm, loving every minute of it! While she was doing that, I looked for a picture of her and couldn’t find quite what I wanted.

So we took a break and had a little photo shoot to get the pic I was wanting for the frame. Then she went back to colouring and I sat down to edit her picture and although I tried not to, I just had to add an Ali Edwards overlay from Designer Digitals. Love those overlays just a bit too much!

Once the frame was coloured, I printed and added the photo and we were done! It was super easy, meaningful for the mom, and a great project for a two-year-old.

Isn’t that the sweetest face ever? Love her.

If you want to re-create this and can’t find frames, I’d suggest a primed canvas. All you would have to do is mount the picture to the top after the colouring or painting is done and you have a fabulous gift for aunts, uncles, grandparents – something that would mean so much for those hard to buy people!

Let me know what you do for gifts from kids – I need more ideas!

1. As you’re reading this I”m flying to Orlando! Yay! I’m headed off for four days of classes and workshop with the best in the industry at the Collins Rep show. I’m excited – the show in Houston last year was fabulous so I know what to anticipate this year and it makes me even more eager to be there!

2. Aussie Scrap Source has a great tutorial on altering pictures with paint. I definitely have to try out the first technique, the sample looks amazing!

3. I love this card by Shari Carroll. It looks fabulous and is so easy! I took a Hero Arts class from her in Houston last year and she and Jennifer McGuire were amazing! Unfortunately, neither are there this year but I’m sure the HA teachers will live up to my expectations!

4. Julie Fei-Fan Balzer is up to her creative genius again! She has an awesome tutorial on how to make your own vellum leaves – a must try!

5. There’s a few videos here on the new Ranger Metallic Distress Stains. I don’t think I need to tell you that I’m excited to be trying those this weekend with Tim Holtz! 🙂
