Garbage

Yes, today’s post is about garbage.

Our garbage man, to be exact.

Now, I’m sure he has a name, and a different official title than “Garbage Man” but in my house, to my kiddies, that’s what he’s called.

Every Friday morning they all line off in the front window, just waiting for him to come by, and every Friday he stops and waves. They love him. And when someone else does his route occasionally, they know.

A while back the city gave all of us fancy new garbage cans that be picked up by the trucks and dumped in. This has made Friday mornings even more exciting – it’s a robot truck!

Well, last Friday, I hear the usual commotion about the truck and the cans and wow, look at that. And then they all went crazy.

“Mama, mama! Sara, Sara! He’s coming to our door!”

What? Why would he be coming to our door?

Well, to give us presents of course! Yes, presents.

He gave each of the four kiddies who watch him every Friday a little tiny garbage can.

It even has wheels that turn and a lid that opens. Naturally, that only makes them even cooler to the kids. “Mama!” said in a hushed and awed voice, “It’s just like a real live garbage can!”

So, to the City of Mount Pearl and especially to our very own Garbage Man – thank you. You are officially one of the kiddies favourite people ever.

G and his funny sayings…

G: Can we go to Tricia’s house for a little while?

Me: No, my baby, Tricia is sick.

G: What’s wrong with her?

Me: Oh, she has a really bad throat and her ears hurt.

G: We should bring Tricia an orange.

Me: Why should we bring her an orange?

G: Because oranges always help when people are sick.

G - Sweet boy

My boy is the sweetest. 🙂

The Final Batch

I was down in my Scrapcave the other day and found a stamp that was randomly lying around – not unusual given the mess down there! Anyway, I saw it and thought, “I know what to do with that!” and less than an hour later I had ten more Christmas cards!

I said I was taking Christmas off, and by that I meant I was taking out the stress. So far, so good. 10 cards in 45 minutes? No stress at all!

holly jolly cardFirst I stamped the sentiment in Versamark on red scrap paper, embossed in Silver, then punched it out. I misted a kraft card base with Calico White Mister Huey’s, added a bit of washi tape, tied some twine, and popped off the punched piece.

A bit of colour, a bit of shine, and a bit of dimension – what more do you need?

Inside I stamped a sentiment and some snowflakes in brown then slipped in the family pic.

And that’s it – the final batch of cards for this year!

Hope you all have a holly jolly one yourselves!

12 on Twelve – December

Tags

Last Wednesday was 12 on Twelve time again. And it was a cool one because for the last time in our lifetimes all the numbers were the same – 12/12/12.

Here’s what I got, a pretty low-key day all around!

12on12december1. Breakfast while trying to catch up on email/blogs/twitter….

2. Christmas card photos back from the printer – chopping them all up.

3. My first Christmas decoration! A free printable from Simple Scrapper.

4. My standard monthly selfie in the porch.

5. The boys, walking over their “bridges.”

6. Miss M brought home her school pics – she’s such a cutie!

7. Mr. G at gymnastic with Nana.

8. Me and my Kobo, enjoying a very rare quiet moment at nap time!

9. Rosie looking out my horribly dirty windows at the nasty snow.

10. Errands and Christmas shopping.

11. A drink for me, a coffee for a pal.

12. Selfie with Lori in her mirror.

So D took the kids to have their pictures taken with Santa today and of course, he asked what they wanted for Christmas. M said a Lego friends treehouse (hint, hint Uncle Matthew) and G said “I want a light bulb. ”

And he was dead serious. 🙂

Party Cards!

Tags

, , ,

I went to a great party last night with an awesome group of friends and laughed until I hurt. We crafty types, we know how to have a good time!

This was the party I mentioned a couple of days ago that I made cards for. Almost half the cards I made in total this year actually!

Again, I went super simple (and check out the cute photo bomber):

Kraft paper, naturally, with snowflakes stamped in Colorbox Pigment ink in Frost White (the best white ink) and then tied up with baker’s twine. A strip of October Afternoon washi, a mist of Blizzard Mr.Huey’s and done.

Inside I added a sentiment from the My Mind’s Eye Winter Wonderland stamp set and more mist, plus the twine gave me the perfect spot to stick the family photo:

And the shimmer from the Blizzard is awe-some! Love the iridescence of it!

Unfortunately, I thought of misting after writing names on all the washi in non-permanent ink and so some of them were blurred and smudgy. Going with my “taking Christmas off” vibe this year, I shrugged and said, “Meh.”

And I didn’t feel guilty at all. 🙂

Chocolate Heaven – Complete with Friends!

Tags

, ,

On Sunday night past, 11 friends and I had the most delicious and amazing and fun 4 hours ever.

We made chocolate. Real chocolate.

Downtown St. John’s has a small local Artisan chocolate company called the Newfoundland Chocolate Company.

NL Chocolate Company

They make all their chocolates by hand, using small farm cocoa beans from around the world, and local NL ingredients for almost everything else.

The fillings they have are incredible – all local berries, for example, and their packaging is beautiful – go check out their website, you won’t be sorry!

The 12 of us did the three hour class (we were there for four) that included learning how to temper chocolate, making our own, and learning about and tasting their single origin chocolate. It was worth every penny and more. And the chocolates we made look like a pro did them! 🙂

First step, we had to pick and fill our moulds to make the shells – half of us were die hard dark lovers, the other half were milk lovers. I went dark!

pouring the dark goodness

Can I rock a hairnet or what?!?

Of course, we all got well covered in chocolate during the process…

chocolate hands… but that was easily licked cleaned off!

Our good-natured and very patient tour guides/hosts/teachers for the night were Andrea, one of the chocolatiers…

Andrea…and Christina, who co-owns the company with her husband:

ChristinaOn a side note, Christina is also an amazing potter and sells the most beautiful pieces at the shop – such as mugs that look like dark, milk, and white chocolate all swirled together.

Once our shells were set, we added our chosen additions to the chocolate filling – I went with partridgeberry powder, crushed hazelnuts, and cocoa nibs – filled the shells, and then topped them off with another layer of chocolate.

chocolates! Can you tell how excited Rae Lynn and I were? 🙂

While we waited for them to set, we had a tour of the building, and sampled their Single Origin Chocolates. Wow, what a difference using single origin beans makes! The 5 we tried were all completely different. Although all were dark, the underlying flavours ran from black licorice, to mango, to cherry, to banana. This is not your cheap little Hershey bar, my friends!

By that time, our chocolates were done!

finished chocolatesNow, don’t they look great?!? Luckily, we didn’t fancy them up – that would have ruined the whole pro look altogether!

We ended the night by getting certificates and asking them to hire us. We got the paper, but no job offers – sad. Still have my fingers crossed though.

Certified! :)

All in all, one of the best nights I’ve ever had, with the greatest group of friends.

a little overdosed on good chocolate...

Cathie, Krista, Tina, Norine, me, Lori, Peggy, Heather, Rae Lynn, Marg, Christine, Liz

We’re already planning another round so Christina and Andrea? Get geared up, the crazy girls will be heading your way again!

Christmas Card Fail…

Tags

,

So, in previous years I’ve been really good about making Christmas cards. Not necessarily as good about sending them but good about making them. Usually, I do 10 of the same ones each month so by the time December rolls around, I have about 100 done. Easy, stress-free, and still fun to do.

This year, well, I kind of really fell off the bandwagon.

Christmas Cards = epic fail.

Apart from the one-offs I did for classes here, here, and here, I have made 38 cards. And 16 of those I made yesterday for a party I’m going to tomorrow night. A party full of crafty, scrappy friends. AKA, hang your head in shame if you don’t bring homemade.

Now I feel I need to say that if someone going to that party gives me a store-bought card I won’t mind at all! Really, I won’t!

But….. I may curse you under my breath for being a stronger girl than I and saying, “Shag it all – I’m buying!”

Back to my point. Only a few cards got made this year. And I’m ok with that. To be honest, I’ve decided to take this Christmas off – who’s with me? 🙂

Oh, I’ll still be decorating – but it hasn’t happened yet.

And I’ll still have cookies – but I won’t be baking (thanks Mom and Taffety!)

And I’ll still go to parties – but I’m not throwing one of my own.

Yup, taking Christmas off this year, my friends, and I feel no guilt at all! Try it, it’s actually liberating!

That being said I do have a few cards so here are the first ones I made, while at the Paperie retreat in November.

fa la la card

Super simple, but I love that Charlie Brown tree, it makes me happy, as does kraft paper.

And the teeny tiny sentiment inside also makes me happy:

fa la la card - inside

So happy and merry easy Christmas to you all, may everyone have as guilt free an epic fail as I do!
