ICAD, Index Card A Day

So this was a test run with an idea I had for the Year Long Album class. It was an epic failure. But… I thought that with the right paper and more room I might be able to make it work – and I did!

So today you’re getting a bit of the process from idea to completed teaching pages!

Here’s the card:

adore you

The resist and the Distress Paint idea didn’t work at all the way I wanted but the drywall mesh:

adore you - drywall mesh

and the areas where I took off the mesh:

adore you - drywall mesh negative

are pretty cool.

Then I moved on to my Dylusions Art Journal to test it out again and voila! That’s what I was looking for!

Distress Paint Resist

The resist worked great and so did the paint. The rainbow page was the technique I attempted on the index card:

Distress Paint Resist - rainbow

and the texture that came about is yummy!

Distress Paint Resist - rainbow texture

I then tried out something a little different:

Distress Paint Resist - purple

and love how it ended up as well, with its fun drywall mesh pattern:

Distress Paint Resist - purple texture

And when I moved onto the paper we would be using in class, it still worked – big sigh of relief here! I’ll share those pages after the class takes place on Sunday so keep an eye out for them.

And if you haven’t played with Distress Paint yet, what are you waiting for? Seriously, it’s so much fun the way it moves and reacts with water – go get some and I’ll see you back here with the mini tutorial for these pages in a few days!

Creative Imaginations, Dylusions, ICAD, ICAD2, Index Card A Day, Ranger, Twinkling H2O's

As promised, here’s M’s card:

She used simple Crayola watercolours but the way she picks and blends colours is amazing to me. I would never think of using the colours she mixes together and she loves it when she makes a new one! And they always seem to work – she’s got a good eye, that one!

I got a new stamp set that just had to be broken in so I started with another premade base – this one was clear gesso over the hexagon portion of the 12×12 Punchinella.

I knew the quote I was using so wanted a night sky and a moon. I painted the moon with two shades of Twinkling H2O’s then, because I didn’t have a dark or navy blue, painted teal over the card, followed by a deep purple and used tons of water to blend – the colour was perfect! I sprinkled some salt but it didn’t work for some reason so, whatever!

I didn’t like the moon, it needed something more and book paper seemed to do the trick – I love how the paint for the sky darkened the edges of the moon and how the paint from the moon lightened the area of the sky around it.

I stamped the sentiment directly on the card but it didn’t stand out so I took a tag from my Tuesday Techniques post, stamped on that, cut it out and it was perfect!

This card turned out even better than I had hoped! The texture from the gesso and the stencil is subtle and exactly what I wanted for this, and I love the gradient in the quote strips. Plus, the moon seems to be glowing – awesome!

It’s Canada Day weekend here and more importantly, Memorial Day in Newfoundland¹, so I’ll be away this weekend but still creating! Can’t wait to see what everyone else comes up with in the next few days!

ICAD, ICAD2, Index Card A Day, Ranger ChitChat Stickers, The Crafter's Workshop

I had a premade base for this – Flexible Molding Paste spread over the star portion of a 12×12 Punchinella stencil.

I started by blowing three different watercolours around with a straw. I wasn’t happy with the amount of tentacles spreading out and there was too much solid space so I covered the whole thing with my new, but old,  favourite product – Twinkling H2O’s! I really like how the colours blended together more and appear layered under a translucent teal cover.

For my quote, I used one that M and I say to each other all the time but in my ChitChat stickers there was no “stars” so I wrote it on the card. Blerg. Then I stamped the letters on one of my Martha Stewart kraft sticker labels, cut out each letter and stuck them down. Then I covered the word and letter stickers with matte multimedium which removed some of the teal paint around the stickers revealing more of the original colour – pretty cool!

I got lots of glare from the shimmer but it’s super sunny here (yay! and finally!) so that’s all I can do folks! 🙂

I really like how the stars appear to be part of the whole but still have lots of texture and dimension on their own:

M decided to jump in the game again so I’ll be back later with another card of mine and one of hers too!

ICAD, ICAD2, Index Card A Day

Two index cards for you today…

The first one is super simple and uses a technique I’ve been meaning to play with but always seems to get put on the back burner. Amy Tangerine originally did it  with watercolours but I broke out my Twinkling H2O’s, of course!

I didn’t use gesso first so getting the paint to move proved to be a bit of a challenge but I really like how it turned out. Once that part was done, I didn’t want to cover it all up and so was a little stumped as to what to do next. I googled quotes and found this one which seemed perfect. I printed it out on Martha Stewart kraft stickers labels and adhered it, then inked the card edges and was done.

I finally got a picture of all the shimmer and shine that are in Twinkling H2O’s! Isn’t it amazing?

My second card got gessoed and heat set to make bubbles, then had all sorts of stuff thrown at it until some combination worked! There’s some stamping, some misting, and some Twinkling H2O’s. Add in the paper piecing and word stickers and we’re done!

I love how this finally turned out and am really glad I went back at the last second to paper piece the last top hat man.

Back tomorrow with another one! And there’s another post today so if you missed Tuesday Techniques, scroll down!

Coca-Cola, Flickr Gallery, ICAD, Index Card A Day, Kiddies, Paperie

1. I’m still loving Index Card A Day, which I’m sure you’ve picked up on! You can start any time with no pressure to catch up – I think Anne and Graham would do awesome stuff with this… 🙂

M has done the last couple of days with me and her cards are getting rave reviews in the Flickr Gallery!

2. I am not a cola fan. As a matter of fact, I am not a soft drink fan. Or a caffeine fan. I digress!

I am not a cola fan, but…this is pretty awesome!

3. G spent part of the day like this:

yelling, “3, 4, 6, 8! 3, 4, 6, 8!” I’m pretty sure he meant 2, 4, 6, 8 but hey, it’s close for a 3-year-old! And don’t ask about the bowl, I guess it was necessary for a counting Superman wannabe! Sorry for the very blurry pic, he thought it was a fun game to run whenever I picked up the camera!

4. I spent part of today making tags for this class and discovering a fun new technique – I can’t wait to share! If you have Distress Markers, or want to know more about them, come to The Paperie on Wednesday for 10 technique tags – it’s going to be fun!

Sneak Peek!

5. I bought 4 of these for the kiddies today – M wants the bunny but I couldn’t find it and got tired of feeling up the packages! 🙂 If anyone finds one and wants to pass it along, that would be awesome!

Check later this evening for a new ICAD, including one by Miss M!
