ssbloghop-2013

The story starters and templates were amazing this month! I love them every month but there was something special about this set that I really enjoyed. Maybe it’s because I got to have fun with one of Gabe’s crazy pics or maybe it’s because my Mom did the journaling for the other. Either way, this is a great month to be a member!

And we’re doing a giveaway so make sure you use the Rafflecopter widget below to enter for a one month trial membership at Simple Scrapper! This is an awesome way to test the waters if you’re not a member yet. There are three ways to enter and three winners will be selected. To be eligible, you must enter by 11:59pm CDT on Wednesday, May 8.

My first LO is from this month’s templates and uses one of Gabe’s crazy face pics.

crazy sock

Since the picture wasn’t the main theme of this LO – his funny quote was! – I chose to minimalize the photo and make the title/quote really stand out by using an Amy Tangerine Stitching template. I was iffy while making it (and it was a lot of work to be iffy about!) but I love how it turned out:

crazy sock - stitching

I used a bunch of layers to mat the photo and make a space for my journaling tag:

crazy sock - embellies

The second LO was inspired by one of this month’s Story Starters and my mom provided the journaling and the title:

mydaughter-herday

I used an awesome paper by Pink Paislee for this one – it’s a resist and when I misted it with some Heidi Swapp Color Shine the pattern popped and shimmered like crazy! I also used the mist on some Heidi Swapp hearts to get the same colour embellies with a different resist pattern, plus added enamel dots and glitter paper for more bling:

mydaughter-herday - layersI had some awesome glitter letters but they didn’t show up on the background so I tinted them with the Color Shine as well:

mydaughter-herday - title

And here’s my mom’s journaling – she was at home so I had to print it on the computer but I’m planning to get her to hand write it and add that to the LO:

mydaughter-herday - tag

Want some more inspiration? Check out the rest of the team – as always, they blew me away with their creations!

The Undones aka Layouts ala KP

Dina Wakley, Kelly Purkey, Scrapbook Layout

Today I’m channeling Cathie and posting some “Undones.”

While I was at The Paperie retreat this past weekend I finished up the LO’s we did while Kelly Purkey was here teaching in March. They’re super simple but all done!

KP - the best 2

Apart from adding some washi tape (Thanks Cathy!) this is pretty much the LO that Kelly did in class – a bit of misting through a stencil, some awesome Dear Lizzy glitter alphas, and fun beaded adhesive strips:

KP - the best 2 glitterI completely changed up the next one because… well just because I wanted to!

KP - love youI stamped the stencil after misting through it, changed the colour of the flowers and the placements of the pics, added a tear strip under the photos to ground them, and punched a border on the edges. However, I did keep the flowers centres – the dots from the i’s on the sticker sheet, pure genius:

KP - love you flowersFinally, I went kind of in between – this started out as Kelly’s LO and then I just kept adding blocks so it’s a little fuller than hers was but has the same base:

KP - happyI love the clear embossed resist ampersand:

KP - happy ampersand

And I added the popped up “happy” diecut from the Dear Lizzy pack:

KP - happy word

This was a super fun class and Kelly used some awesome papers, stencils, and mists. I think it’s safe to say that we all had a great weekend when she was here!

In other news, The Paperie finally announced this weekend that Dina Wakley is coming in August to teach for a whole weekend! If you live in Atlantic Canada, plan a trip to NL for mid-August because this is going to be an incredible opportunity to learn from one of the best in the industry with regards to Art Journaling and Mixed Media. To say I’m excited would be an understatement – vibrating might be more accurate!

Mixed Media Layout, Scrapbook Layout

This is the second LO I made at Cathie’s 7 Layer LO’s class. Loved this one right from the start – I mixed my own paint colour (using Silks, of course!) and we played with monoprinting, molding paste, gesso, and stencils.

I took this pic of Gabe when he was only a few days old – the pictures are deceiving but he was so teeny tiny here! And that white hair – it kills me.

and then there was you

I added InkaGold to the molding paste once it had dried and the shine is awesome sauce:

and then there was you - inkagold

Some doodling with my black pen:

and then there was you - doodling

And layers of stickers and doilies and things to finish it off:

and then there was you - layers

I had originally planned to have one picture of Gabe and one of Molly but the colours were both so perfect for his pics that she got left out this time. I guess that just means I’ll have to make some for her at the Retreat this weekend!

S.

Check out the first LO from that class here!

Love You, You Rock, You are the Best

Mixed media, YearLong Album class

This is – inadvertently – my second post today. I had scheduled my Art Journal post for yesterday but it didn’t go live. Apparently, it wasn’t scheduled after all! Oh well, it just means you get two lots of eye candy today!

For the first time, I finished the LO’s I made for the YearLong Album class. I always leave these blank so people can add their own spin – organize the pictures, add embellishments, etc. – whatever way they want. The difference this year is that the class participants are doing their own thing anyway and I love it! It’s amazing to look around and see how different everyone’s interpretations of the same instructions are.

Anyway, I made my mixed media layered backgrounds and finished them off with pics of Molly and Gabe from March. My finishing touched for Molly’s were extra paper from the starter kit, wood veneer, a doily, hidden journaling, and stickers:

april spread - simply the best

I wanted Gabe’s to flow with hers, make them look like they belongs together in the album, so he has many of the same elements:

april spread - love you, you rockI love the technique to make this background so I will definitely be using it again. Crossing my fingers that everyone is going to love doing them on Sunday and think they’re worth the inky fingers!

One in a Million but only 7 Layers

Mixed Media Layout, ScrapBook

On Saturday I took an awesome class with Cathie. I normally only use mixed media on my canvases (though I’m working on bringing it to my LO’s too) but Cathie’s a genius at the mixed media LO’s. This particular class was all about layers – 7 to be exact!

I only have one completed, due to flicking white mist all over the picture for the second LO, but I managed not to destroy the picture for this one and love the colour and movement in it.

one in a million

I really love all the layers, especially the doily to pull your eye through all the layers around the picture:

one in a million - doily

And this really is One in a Million:

one in a million - title stickers

My Gabe, the day he was born. He came super fast so was pretty bruised and beat up in this picture, hence the darkness to his normally very pale complexion!

Cathie has blogged both LO’s from the class here, and Krista, our very clean and simple friend, also blogged her experience with the class here. I love it when we can bring another one to the dark side of messy hands!

I’ll post the other LO as soon as I get it finished, but I do have lots of other work to do this week for upcoming classes and for Simple Scrapper.

One of the things I’m finishing off is my LO for the Yearlong Class this weekend. After Cathie’s class I came home, looked at what I had done and started counting layers – 6! Think I can get another on there before Sunday? 🙂 The funny thing? They’re completely different layers than hers – isn’t mixed media fun?!?

april spread - sneak

Well, Hello There…

Family, Midway, October Afternoon

A while back I took part in another tag LO – love those! – and since I was number 1 on a long list of people, I kind of forgot about posting it here once the tag part was done.

This actually turned out to be one of my fave LO’s ever. The picture cracks me up, the kit from The Paperie is my favourite one from them since they started, and the way it all came together worked better than I envisioned. A rare, rare occurrence!

The picture of Gabe was taken at the cabin last year and as soon as I saw the expression on his face all I could think of was my grandfather, Edgar Case – he had the same look many times! The thing is, Pop had glasses and a moustache and well, Gabe is only 3, the moustache is not something happening on his face right now!

Enter the kit. It had some October Afternoon Midway paper, including strips that had glasses with moustaches. And by some fluke of the universe, they were the right size for the picture that had been printed for months. It was just all meant to be!

well hello there,,,How seriously funny are those glasses?!?! Can you even believe how perfect they are?

well hello there - glasses

I added a bunch of banners and some flair at the top:

well hello there - embellishment clusterAnd cut out one of the “LOVE” words on the bottom to make it stand out more:

well hello there - love closeupWhen I finished this one, I showed my dad and the first thing he said was, “You really need to show this to my siblings.” Yes, he actually said siblings, it’s just his way! But really, it’s uncanny how much Gabe looks like his great-grandfather here – I wish they could have met.

Back tomorrow with an awesome blog hop full of projects to get you in the spring mood – I know I’m ready for a warmer season!

Summer Life

I was doing some organizing – or attempting it anyway! – when I came across this LO and I’m pretty sure I’ve never shared it here. Plus, it’s a sunny and warm picture and I could cry right now I want warm weather so badly!

Most of this came from a Paperie kit – the snippets of Simple Stories paper, the Dear Lizzie tag, the alphas stickers, but I added the gold Martha Stewart doily:

summer life - gold doily

the Ali Edward’s for Technique Tuesday stamp:

summer life - tag

and some awesome Teal Silks and Tim Holtz filmstrip ribbon:

summer life - silks

Love the white space in this one, empty of even mist spatters. Sometimes, it just needs to be a little cleaner than usual!

summer life

Hoping to get my YLA2013 LO’s done this week so I can post what I’ve done with them. I’m also working on finishing up the February LO’s of Krista’s Keeping Track of Life (KTOL) class. I have the main one finished off with silver thread, now I just need to do the pocket pages and they’ll be ready to share as well!

Cross your fingers you see something completed and posted in the next couple of days!

Another month, another Simple Scrapper blog hop and giveaway! We’re doing the giveaway a little differently this month so make sure you scroll to the bottom of this post and use the Rafflecopter link below to enter a giveaway for a one month trial membership at Simple Scrapper. There are three ways to enter and three winners will be selected. To be eligible, you must enter by 11:59pm CST on Wednesday, March 6.

I used one of the Story Starters this month – the theme is Adventures – to make a mini album of Pirate Day on my dad’s boat a couple of summers ago.

The Pirate says Arr

Super quick and easy to do when using a kit and one template!

The Pirate says Arr - page 1-2

I gave a peek of this album on my guest post over at Simple Scrapper last week and you can check out all the inside pages over at 2peasinabucket.

The Pirate says Arr - page 5-6

For the template sketch, I made a letter size, interactive LO of Miss M who actually wanted me to take her picture for once!

strike a pose

Adding the additional pictures behind the top one allowed me to keep them all at a large 4×6 size while still keeping the LO fairly simple and uncluttered. Plus, there’s loads of space for journaling too!

strike a pose - flap two

Again, you can see additional pictures in my gallery over at 2peas.

Make sure you check out what the other design team members have done – they have some amazing LO’s this month! The list is below if you have lost your way or want to start at the beginning. And don’t forget to enter to win the giveaway!
