Canvas, canvas, Christy Tomlinson, Mixed media, She Art, She Art Girl

So you all know how much I love the She Art workshops I’ve been doing with Christy Tomlinson, right? Seriously one of the top three online classes I’ve ever taken (this one by Jennifer McGuire and this one by Tim Holtz are the others).

Seriously though? 10 videos plus PDF’s for the first week of the first class. 10! And there’s two more weeks after that! Plus there’s a whole other class too!

Awesome.

Anyway, with all my love and excitement I was raring to go but had no canvas. Downer.

I finally got canvas…

… but by then I had watched a week and a half worth of videos and was now confused. I mean really, when you’ve never done something before you really should watch one video, practice the techniques, move on. Not me, my friends, I went to the cabin for the long weekend where there was no internet and so no videos and had to try to muddle along on my own.

Luckily, I’m a bit of a smartie 🙂 and did A-OK.

Then I came home. You see, I wanted rub-ons and I knew I had a stash. Gorgeous Basic Grey rub-ons in black and white, multiple packs of each just waiting for me.

So I turned the scrap cave upside down and no rub-ons.

I started having a very bad feeling that when I gutted a few months back those beautiful rub-ons made it into the giveaway pile (I was being ruthless). So I looked in the small bag I had set aside for M and sure enough, two packs of rub-ons – princess ones and flowers. Cute, but…. Yeah, not quite what I was looking for though I did manage to make some of the flower ones work for me.

And so my rub-ons are in the wind, waiting to be used by someone else. 😦

And then, I went shopping, like you would in this situation, and I found….. nothing. Nada. Zip. Zilch.

Ok, so I lied a little. I found a pack at Dollarama.

Who wants to take bets they’re not going to come off like butter, as my BG ones would have? However, they are rub-ons and if I’m lucky, some will come off the backing sheet! Update: They didn’t stick to the backing sheet but neither did they come off like butter. They were…. ok. 🙂

Long story longer, here’s what rushing ahead in videos and a lack of rub-ons will get you:

I’m pretty pleased with her (though she does have some skinny legs)!

I used the quote, “She thought she could so she did,” because I thought it fitting for my first piece like this and also fitting for just jumping in with no backup instructions for guidance!

She had to have a flower on her dress since every time I showed her to M and asked if M liked her, she would say, “I won’t think she’s pretty until she has a flower in her dress.” Flowers in her hair and stars on her dress were not sufficient. Trust me, I tried!

Anyway, this one is mine and I love how she turned out. As Christy would say, “She’s a cutie!”

I have big plans for Christmas gifts and other things so let’s hope they work out. If they do, I’m going to have a couple of super cute gifts on my hands!

I’m going to try my hand at Art Journaling. Not anything personal, like a daily, write your thoughts, dreams, wishes, type of art journal, just one where I get to play!

And I’m a lucky girl because I have two friends, Cathie and Tina, who are doing this with me (though they already art journal, I’m the newbie!) If we’re super lucky, we’ll actually get together once a month too!

Here are the things I have to begin my Play Art Journal:

1. A mixed media album and some watercolour paper:

The album had the most heinous cover ever so that got gessoed and moulding pasted over immediately. It already looks better! Love the dimension, can’t wait to see what happens when I get around to adding colour:

2. The Crafter’s Workshop Stencils:

These are the Dylusions by Dyan Reavely – I’ll get more of these for sure! I love the patterns, the size, and that they come with a border too!

And these ones are mostly Julie Fei-Fan Balzer. Great designs, I have new ones of these already on the way!

3. Paint, Stain, Mist:

These are super cheap watercolour paints and I have some big plans for them! Also, aren’t they pretty! 🙂

I have a bunch of Claudine Hellmuth’s Studio Paints, all the Adirondack ColorWash and Dylusions Ink Sprays, Distress Stains and Inks, and more. These are going to be fun!

4. Gesso, Moulding Pastes (my friend Marg gave me a couple to try out that are amazing!), and Multi Medium.

5. Stamps:

I think my faves are going to be the Tim Holtz and Dylusions from Stamper’s Anonymous, but I have some Ali Edwards ones that I know will make their way in too. And there are some Dylusions stamps with people that are going to have to be mine very soon!

6. I also have the basics – a water mister, paint brushes, Archival Ink (need more colours there too!).

To help me along my way, a few of us are doing ICAD through Daisy Yellow. This is where you make one Index Card A Day – it can be written on , or painted, or gessoed, or whatever you want. The point is to do one a day. I see this as a great place and media on which to experiment!

In the past, I have only done one thing that has mixed media stuff going on – at The Paperie Retreat in May, I had fun with my Week in the Life album:

Yes, I know I haven’t posted the album yet, that’s because it’s not quite done. Almost though, and I will post it then, promise!

Want to join in the fun? I’m planning to post my Art Journal stuff on Wednesdays, once I actually start and I’d love to see your stuff too! Even join me for ICAD, it’s easy and anyone can do it, even if you only want to doodle everyday!

See you all tomorrow, maybe with a colourful Art Journal cover in tow! 😉 And if anyone has some suggestions for this new adventure or links I should check out, please let me know!
