Card Kit, Simple Scrapper, The Paperie

I have a double dose for you today – my November Simple Scrapper Sketches and some of my Paperie Card Kit LO’s!

Jennifer’s sketches this month were amazing and I made three LO’s with them, using the Card Kit as my paper base.

First is my Story Starter LO:

there was us

I love, love, love the colours in the kit and I was very excited to discover that the Dear Lizzie fabric frames matched perfectly! I know I normally only use the contents of the kit, but I simply had to add those frames in – I suggest you go buy them if you’re getting the kit!

I did lots of layers and some fussy cutting with this one, plus had some fun with the ribbon:

there was us - ribbon

One of the big bonuses in this month’s kit is the Wink of Stella pen – look at the shimmer!

there was us - wink of stella

My next LO was pretty simple – just a couple of pics from one of our many days on the beach this summer:

sunshine

I kept it fairly monochromatic with some punches of gold as an accent. I did have fun doodling with my Faber-Castell pen and adding little enamel dots:

sunshine - layers

Finally, the kit had some anchor and sailboat paper so I just had to pull out a picture of sailing on my dad’s boat:

at the helm

I added some stash stuff to this LO too, in the form of a Studio Calico wooden boat, an anchor, and some hearts. Plus, I layered lots of fun bits and bobs:

at the helm - embellies

The arrow paperclip and the heart ones from the first LO are also included in the kit – lots of fun goodies this month!

As you can see from above, we’ve changed the Simple Scrapper Blog Hop to a Community Show & Tell! Just click here to go check it out, see the team’s work, and add a link to your own!

If you want to see the rest of the Card Kit reveal, go the The Paperie blog for my work here and Wendy’s take on the kit here. Of course, you can pop in the store to see them all in person as well!

Whew – that was a lot to cover today! Now go grab a coffee and enjoy all the eye candy!

YLA2013 | August

Mixed Media Layout, YLA2013

I taught another session of the Year Long Album a week or so ago and we made our August LO’s. These might be among my favourites ever!

We broke out the Twinkling H2O’s, everyone got new stencils and some fun wood veneer, and we played with crayons – it was a good day!

The first LO used a gel medium resist under the photo:

september - pirate boy resist

After spraying our confetti with a bunch of mist colours, we added those for a little extra dimension:

september - pirate boy confetti

A few flicks of contrasting Twinks and the base was done:

August - pirate boy

The second one used crayons for a more subtle (or more vibrant, depending on the brand of crayon used) resist:

september - sleepy girl crayon resist

The crayon I used above gave more of a colour difference while the one I demoed in class was a true resist:

september - crayon resist

Again, we misted and added confetti, this time in a less random pattern:

september - sleepy girl confetti

And, with the extra flicks of Twinks, it was finished:

August - sleepy girl

They’re pretty simple but the techniques can be used for super cool backgrounds and the shimmer of the Twinks just adds to the awesomeness – have I mentioned my love for Twinks? 😉

It’s already October which means I’m thinking about next year’s class and sign ups will be coming sooner than later. We always have the best bunch of people, a ton of fun, and great products so if you’re interested in knowing more or signing up, call the Paperie and get put on the list!

DT badge - simple scrapper

Have I got some eye candy for you all today, my friends! Not only am I sharing my October LO’s for Simple Scrapper but so are a bunch of the other SS girls! I’ll leave a link to their blogs at the end of this post so make sure you check them out and leave them some love.

First of all I have to say, I always love Jennifer’s templates and Story Starters but I really think she outdid herself this month – they were fabulous!

The template LO I did used a bunch of Studio Calico PL cards:

so very loved

Love how this turned out. I took the photo of Molly when she and I had a “Sam”* day earlier in September and it worked perfectly with these cards and template.

I added a line of text to the photo before I printed it so I didn’t have to add extra journaling on the LO itself:

so very loved - photo

My Story Starter LO this month uses pictures of Molly on the day she was born and because of the journaling and photos, it may be one of my all time faves:

you are here

I hid the journaling (of course) in an envelope behind the pictures:

you are here - journaling

A few sequins, some tiny Basic Grey Alphas, and that was it!

you are here - title

Now, time to head over to see what the other girls have in store for you. They all rocked the templates this month so you’re in for some great inspiration!

Paperie Card Kit | September: Part 2 (landscape LO’s)

8.5x11, Card Kit, landscape layout, The Paperie

I’m back with the landscape LO’s I did with the kit this month. I actually have two 8.5×11’s and one 6×8.

The first one has a fun element of the title stamped and heat embossed on the photo itself:

possibilities - title

I love the shine of the gold embossing powder!

I also layered a bunch of cloud stickers and a hot air balloon to make an embellishment cluster at the top:

possibilities - layers

I used one of the random looking stamps and some brown ink to add subtle texture to those elements, then stamped the date in black.

It’s a perfect title and soft look for this pic of Molly:

possibilities

The second LO is completely different than the other four I made – it’s amazing how you can really change up the look of a kit with some different ink or mist.

I used Clear Tar Gel through a stencil, then Dylusions Ink Spray to get the resist:

vw van - resist

And I angled everything for an interesting look. The picture is of my brother and I sleeping on what appears to be a couch in a tin can but is really the backseat of our VW Van, before my father made it into a rockin’ campervan. 🙂

vw van

Finally, I made an unusual size, a 6×8. This could be mounted on an 8.5×11 sheet of paper but I’m going to cut an 8×8 page protector down and slide it in that as it is.

dina

The main photo is on an envelope that flips open:

dina - flip open

to reveal 8 more pictures! I love the pics that were taken at the Meet and Greet The Paperie had for Dina Wakley and really wanted to showcase them all – this works for me!

A little hidden journaling in the envelope, accented with another great stamp from the included set:

dina - journaling

And some stamped circles, Dina style, with wonky, hand cut circles of patterned paper inside:

dina - circles

I hope you liked these and enjoyed the overabundance of photos – I’ll be back soon with the mini album I made!

Paperie Card Kit | September: Part 1 (portrait LO’s)

8.5x11, Card Kit, portrait layouts, The Paperie

Today I’m sharing the two portrait LO’s I did with the September card kit. True to form, I did 4 – 8.5×11 LO’s and a mini album, plus a bonus 6×8 LO that I’ll share later (it has 9 photos on it!).

This was the first LO I made with the kit:

traveling lion

I love this pic of Gabe – everywhere we go, he wants Lion to tag along by riding on his backpack. It’s definitely a shot in time of Gabe and what he likes!

The kit is full of vintage looking Farmhouse Paper Company papers and they have the best bits and pieces for embellishing – I couldn’t resist using the balloon and postcard to reinforce the travel theme. Plus, I love a little cluster of goodies!

traveling lion - cluster

The second LO showcases a new and exciting skill Molly learned this summer – blowing bubbles!

bubbles

She was so proud of herself and insisted I take a picture…

every. time! It really was a big deal. 🙂

As per usual, I added hidden journaling:

bubbles - journaling

And I created a focal area by smearing molding paste through a stencil down the centre of the page, then layering the title over that:

bubbles - title

I love these papers and discovered the best way to add pictures was by editing the colour on my photos. The papers are such muted colours that the photos were clashing with the papers – adding a slight sepia tone made all the difference and now they look like they belong with the papers.

There may be one or two kits left at the Paperie and trust me, between the exclusive Farmhouse product and the awesome stamp set, this is one to pick up!

DT badge - simple scrapper

It’s the first Tuesday in September and that means I’m showing you all the DT LO’s I made for Simple Scrapper this month!

You’ve already seen this one:

home

It’s inspired by one of the September Story Starters – if you want to get more info on the exclusive sketch and see the detail shots, check it out here. That will also tell you about Paper Issues; Simple Scrapper is the sponsor for this month’s Issue and there are some great prizes to be won!

My second LO for the month isn’t really a LO at all – it’s a full calendar. I’ve been looking after this sweet boy for three years and Friday was his last day coming here. Every Christmas I make a calendar for the parents but I’ve started this one early, with the help of a September Premium Members Sketch!

july

I love how Jennifer’s templates can even work for non-layout pieces and mixed media!

Plus, it’s easily switched up for portrait and landscape photos.

august

Aimee and Arielle are also posting their LO’s today so be sure to check them out and while you’re at it, leave them a little love! Then come back here for the list of the whole team (on the right over there!) and check out the work they have posted on their blogs and in their 2Peas Galleries.

I promise to post the last of my July Paperie Card Kit in the next day or so; be sure look out for that – it’s a super sweet mini album! And on Friday, I’ll start sharing the September Card Kit, it’s awesome!

Paperie Card Kit | July: Part 3

Card Kit

I know, I know, I’m being super slow about posting these LO’s but I’m almost done! Here’s the last one, with a mini tutorial about how it all came together.

First of all, I smeared Silver Croco through the Chunky Chevron stencil by Balzer Designs for The Crafter’s Workshop to make a place for my photo. You can see from the picture what’s it like wet (on the left) and dry (on the right):

wading - wet and dry croco

I love the shine and crackle! Plus, this paint can be heat set immediately and still crack – that’s an awesome quality in my impatient books! And when you overheat it you get bubbles along with the cracks, making fabulous texture:

wading - crackle

Once that was all dry, I decided to make a fun interactive piece. I like to have one picture on my LO’s but there were a couple more I wanted to include. Also, I like to hide my journaling so I needed to figure out a way to get all those elements on the page and still only show one photo. The solution? One of the kraft envelopes in the kit! I added tape to the flap:

wading - envelope flap

Then I added little patterned paper and sticker flags to the edge:

wading - labels

Once it was adhered to the background page, I had a spot to put my extra pics and a pocket for my journaling – you just use the flags to flip it open:

wading - envelope

I simply made a journaling card, wrote on it, and tucked it inside the envelope:

wading - journaling

I added my title with the Simple Stories alpha stickersin the kit, doodled around them, and finished the whole thing off with some washi tape that was in the last Card Kit:

wading

I have one more item to show you from this kit – I pretty much used it all up! – and I’m hoping to post that for you early next week. This weekend is going to be all tied up with Dina Wakley coming to the Paperie and I. Can’t. Wait!

The sketch templates from the Simple Scrapper Premium Membership this month are awesome! All 5 are large photo templates, either 12×12 or 8.5×11 – I love them! To see all the Team’s work, click their names over there on the right, or go to the new Team Gallery to see our favourites!

My template LO this month is pretty simple, though it took Lori and I forever to get it figured out on her Silhouette! 🙂

if love was water

We cut the title and then I added the washi tape and wood veneer hearts. I left it at that because I didn’t feel it needed any journaling and I didn’t want to take away from the pic of Gabe at Salmon Cove Sands.

if love was water - letters

I really like the depth the cutting from the Silhouette adds – isn’t it fun?

The second LO is from the Story Starter prompts from this month and uses the scraps I had left from my Paperie July Card Kit – all I added was the 12×12 background sheet:

this is why

I’ve actually used this template before, on this LO, but love it so much I had to pull it out again!

Stitching on the circles gave me some great dimension:

this is why - circles

And instead of having the journaling out in the open, I went with my norm and hid it on a tag:

this is why - journal tag

Simple Scrapper has an awesome promo on right now – if you sign up for email updates, you get a Premium Membership Sampler with templates, Story Starters, and more! It’s definitely worth the sign up!

Aimee is planning on posting her LO’s for August today as well, so make sure you check out her blog, Aimee’s Armoire, to see what great things she made this month.

I know I’ve left you all hanging with the rest of my Card Kit samples for July, but I have that scheduled in for next week, when I’m hoping to get back to at least a couple of posts a week – we’ll have to see what the weather is like!

Paperie Card Kit | July: Part 2

Card Kit, Mixed Media Layout, The Paperie

Sorry for the delay in posting the remainder of my card kit LO’s but we’ve been having warm and sunny weather – as I mentioned before, I’m taking full advantage of the few short weeks we get!

Today I’m showing you one of the two portrait orientation LO’s I made with the kit. I’ll be back later with the other (and a quick step by step on how it came together), and the mini album. On Tuesday I’m going to be posting my Simple Scrapper DT LO’s for August – one of those uses the scraps I had left in the kit. Between my work and Wendy’s, you’re getting a ton of inspiration for this month’s kit; I hope you were lucky enough to snag one!

I did a gel transfer technique to get a circle of arrows on the background (thanks Cathie!) and then messy stitched around it with red metallic thread:

smile - stitching

I used one of my very favourite punches to make tags across the top of the page:

smile - punches

For the title, I stamped a speech balloon, cut a strip from patterned paper, and used a Jillibean Soup label, all layered up on the photo:

smile - labels

I love the colours (the Simple Stories paper pad in the kit is fabulous!) and how this one turned out – it was so much fun to make!

smile

A little birdie told me there were one or two kits left at The Paperie so if you don’t have one yet, go get it – the stamp set alone makes this one a must-have!

I hope you’re all enjoying your summer as much as I am and getting some great pics – I have lots of beach and sand photos to scrap soon!

Card Kit, The Paperie

Last month’s Card Kit at the Paperie was so popular that Wendy has decided to do them monthly! But they are going  super fast so make sure you call and get your reserved or better yet, pop by the new store and pick one up.

Wendy did some awesome cards this month and today I’m going to show you the two landscape LO’s I made with the supplies.

Dance Machine is super simple – I really wanted the focus to be on the photos of Gabe posing and dancing in the driveway. In order to really bring the pictures to the forefront, I painted gesso over the area they would be, making a focal point:

dance machine

I doodled around the edges with my Pitt Pens, of course, and brought more attention to the title of letter stickers by drawing sketchy lines around them as well:

dance machine - title

There is a fabulous pack of wooden and chipboard buttons in the kit and I think I used them all! The bright colours of these worked with the pics and the yellowy-orange one is one point of an embellishment triangle around the photos:

dance machine - buttons

The second LO features Gabe’s lions on washing day. He specifically requested they be hung by their hands so they could see what was happening in the yard while they dried!

say cheese

I used several of the stamps from the included set (it’s awesome!) on the Simple Stories patterned paper from the kit and cut them out to use as embellishments around the picture, along with some of the chipboard buttons:

say cheese - layersThe journaling is hidden under another stamped tag:

say cheese - journaling

and I cut pieces out of some patterned paper to make a cluster at the top corner:

say cheese - arrowsThe edges seemed boring to me so I dampened them and then rolled to get some extra dimension and interest on the page.

Hope you liked these, I’ll be back soon with the portrait LO’s I did with the kit! Also, check out The Paperie and/or their blog to see all my projects this month, plus Wendy’s cards (here’s a peek!), and to get your own kit – I’d love to see what you make with it!
