Yes, today’s post is about garbage.
Our garbage man, to be exact.
Now, I’m sure he has a name, and a different official title than “Garbage Man” but in my house, to my kiddies, that’s what he’s called.
Every Friday morning they all line off in the front window, just waiting for him to come by, and every Friday he stops and waves. They love him. And when someone else does his route occasionally, they know.
A while back the city gave all of us fancy new garbage cans that be picked up by the trucks and dumped in. This has made Friday mornings even more exciting – it’s a robot truck!
Well, last Friday, I hear the usual commotion about the truck and the cans and wow, look at that. And then they all went crazy.
“Mama, mama! Sara, Sara! He’s coming to our door!”
What? Why would he be coming to our door?
Well, to give us presents of course! Yes, presents.
He gave each of the four kiddies who watch him every Friday a little tiny garbage can.
Can you tell how much they love them?
It even has wheels that turn and a lid that opens. Naturally, that only makes them even cooler to the kids. “Mama!” said in a hushed and awed voice, “It’s just like a real live garbage can!”
So, to the City of Mount Pearl and especially to our very own Garbage Man – thank you. You are officially one of the kiddies favourite people ever.

Someone told me one time it’s the small things in life that are so important. Thanks for making a small moment of time so precious. Very seldom do we hear these stories but when we do it makes everyone think of the good in people. And in this world now it’s so important. I am so grateful that you took the time to post such a beautiful story. The love that these kids felt for this “Garbage Man” topped the scale. I’m sure Santa will be good to all of you. You’ve inspired a lot of people with your story. Have a great Christmas.

Thanks Sharon! Bob the Garbage Man did little things but many other people would have stopped at a wave to the kids in the window. I really wanted him to know how much we appreciated the bit of time he took on those mornings. And I agree, in the world right now it is very important to remember how much good is out there. Have a fabulous Christmas yourself!

It is so nice! I was floored that he took the time to see how many kids were here, get the cans, then actually get out of his truck and come knock on the door. Lots of little things that many people wouldn’t have bothered with!

Sara, this is so unbelievably nice. TFS. It’s one of those small things that really make you smile. What a nice man, and perhaps the City who provided the little cans. I love Mount Pearl… but sadly moved under the overpass and athough I feel like a Pearl girl, jurisdically I am not anymore!!
